    Well it looks like I’m going to have to jamb this car, assemble and shoot the exterior. Just too many stripes to get away with shooting it disassembled.
    And I only want to assemble this thing one more time.

    So what do you guys think about the 3m Transition tape with the adhesive only in the center?

    How does this method compare to the Rope, and half round designs of transition tapes? One thing I like about the looks of this setup is how you can stack it row after row for multiple coatings.
    Seal, pull first row off. Base tear next row off. Clear pull the final row off.

    I’m not sure how you would do this with the Rounded Designs.
    Or with the Fold over Back masking method.

    I just get tired of buffing lines out of my jambs. So maybe spending a few extra bucks (Or in 3M’s case a lot of extra bucks) to avoid having to deal with it.

    I guess the question is what works best, and who offers the best value for transition tapes?

    Also what do you guys do to prep for masking your jambs?
    I’ve always had a little trouble with this.

    You Back mask it first then hit it with a scotch bright pad and it seems like you always get the dust sticking to your adhesive. And then it blowing around while you’re shooting, no matter how much you try to blow it out before you start shooting.

    Or you pre-scuff it before masking and you always seem to exceed your backmasking and have to polish the exceeding abrasion out.

    So what are you guys doing?

    Maybe I need to get me one of those scuff pens. I think that is what they are designed for. Right?

    someone suggested before to spray the car in primer and then shoot the jambs in color with the doors off, reassemble, shoot the exterior in color and then clear the whole car inside and out. i liked that idea and i tried it on a collision job. it does do a pretty good job but you need to mask the jambs well so the paper doesnt stick to the doors.

    That was actually me suggesting it. :lol1 I’m just not sure if I could put it off with the Jambs on these Mustangs… I may be able to if I shoot the interior of the door first, and mask that off completely, then just shoot the jambs… What I won’t be able to reach will likely be non visible. So I may be able to get away with it.

    I have found that spraying the outside first works really well. Just drop your maksing tape about 1/4″ in or to the first lip so you get base and clear on it. Then go back after the car is sprayed and do the jamb. I use the new transition tape and lay it down with the sticky stuff right on the edge of the quarter. Make sure the edge of the tape hangs ofer just a smidge. Spray the jamb and when its dry if needed hit the edge lightly with 3000 then polish. It will be a seamless transition. The 3m tape works great!
