Ok so I’ll need to wait 10 mins before spraying!
What about after tacking?AndyT, that’s exactly what happened: I sprayed my first coat full wet, it looked HORIBBLE. :rofl
I was thinking how the hell did that happen. There were these huge circles on surface that looked like paint was blistering about to come off.I’m gonna try it again this weekend. :woohoo:
April 9, 2010 at 12:42 am #20570You can go straight on after tacking, it’s only after wiping down with any sort of cleaner that you need to wait a while, just to make sure they’ve fully dissapeared.
Jimmo – Going back to the gun question, you might want to ask Devilbiss customer support to explain page one of the GTi operation manual. Especially this part:
Important: These spray guns are suitable for use with both water-based and solvent-based materials. The design ~ blah blah blah ~. Nozzles and needles are manufactured in stainless steel ~ blah blah ~
I think they were just trying to get you to buy a new gun buddy 😉
Ok, sprayed again today, I think I got the hang of it. :cheer:
However, I did get lots of trash in basecoat. I’d wait and sand the dust nibs, spray again and that coat would get trash again.
Does sikkens have some sort of additive to make autowave flash faster?
April 12, 2010 at 2:41 am #20619No…that’s why you use the portable venturi blowers and have a warm place to spray preferably a spray booth. In our spray booths autowave flashes just as fast as solvent basecoat.Sounds like you have trash in your base coat, are you straining it or using a disposable cup system with filters installed?Or do you just have a dirty environment?
Hi Jayson. :welc
I spray in an auto repair shop during weekends (no paint booth), I’d like to add it was about 46-50 F outside (8-12 C). Thats probably why it flashed kinda slow.
I used a hair dryer. It was only a test fender.
Oh I gotta ad, last time I painted was nice and warm, but I stil did get some trash in basecoat.But….. I never had problems with trash in basecoat before when using solvent. Even sometimes I’d get 1-2 dust nibs in clearcoat, but nothing in basecoat.
I’m sure it flashes nice and fast in a warm booth, but I wanna look for a way to make it work in my environment. If I can’t make it work I don’t see how a weekend painter is going to use waterborne to paint.
April 12, 2010 at 3:06 am #20621The only way it will work in your environment is to heat your shop up to at least 20degrees celcius, and you will need the venturi blowers or at least a couple of box fans to help it flash.Like I have said before it is not like solvent and you need to stop comparing the two or you won’t be successful. It won’t work in your environment the way it is,make the changes and it will work.If your hair dryer didn’t have some type of screen on the intake I’m sure it was blowing crap into your base.
The hair dryer does have a screen on back.
I set the shop heat to 20, but I turned it off 10 minutes before spraying to avoid the heater fan blowing dust nibs around.
I’ll shop around for an electric fan, something like this.

I’m just worried it might blow dust nibs over the panel.
April 12, 2010 at 4:58 am #20624If you can warm the panel up first. It takes awhile for metal temp to raise so just turning a heater on for 30 minutes probably won’t do it if the car was cold to start.
Don’t wet the floor either. If it’s drying slow the last thing you need is humidity.
A box fan 8-10 ft away should dry it quick.
I should add a clean air source is very important with water.
I do small jobs on the shop floor without trouble all the time.

October 20, 2010 at 5:27 am #24382i know enviro is a little different. but i had the same problem at first. ton of thrash in the paint.
what i found out was, a few things. one i was useing gersons version of wb linners. bad ideal. when i orederd some 3m’s wb pps. i saw the difference was in the strainers on the lids. gerson’s was still cotton, 3m’s was silk. plus ppg found out a long time ago that the cotton strainers use a water soliable glue, the strainers would come apart. this is what happen with the gersons.the other thing was, that if i didn’t let the base dry well enough. that the base even though i used ppg’s recomended blue base tack rags. it would pull fibers out of the tack rag.
also i have the blowers too. sometimes i use thema sometimes i use my blower. and your really have to forget about how you spray solvent. i had to find out the hard way spray it the way they tell you, or have all the problem you have.
