    Hey Guys

I have a 2001 GMC Jimmy, the tailgate is terrible! I don’t know if it is factory but the paint on the tailgate is big time orange peel.

The question I have is, if I wet sand the tailgate and go through the clear to the base coat can I just respray new clear or is there a special coat or process to follow when respraying over the factory clear??

I remember back in the day Dupont had a clear coat adhesion promoter, that you sprayed on before spraying the clear if you were going over clear???

    Thanks in advance

    Don

I seal with prime or your clear edge will react when the solvets go in to your base under the thin clear edge … ring out on ya :pcorn:

    Thanks for the QUICK replies!

Hey Stone, I am fairly new to all this…

When I was a teen, I knew all the Dupont product line, but now I have to relearn everything!

When you say seal with prime, is that the name of the product?

Thanks guys, the clear is so bad I really would like to sand it down level and then respray and add some thickness before I do any compounding/polishing…

    Sorry Stone

I currently at work (not supposed to be on here)

Anyway I can’t view pdf but were you talking about Dupont 1986S Acrylic Sealer before spraying the clear over?

i meant primer which means painting but the spots that sand through should be sealed with some thing 2k that will harder and need to be sanded …. this will keep solvents from attacking the edge so if you don’t wanna high build over the spots and paint then don’t sand through :pcorn:

scotch bright and clear… then sand smooth and reclear or buff :pcorn:

I’d go with the light sand and re-clear routine too.

Much less hassle than sanding through, sealing, applying base coat, then clearing, but will give you the same outcome (or possibly even better, as clear always seems to lay slicker over sanded clear than basecoat).
