lild & Jason have offered some great advice. Try and worry less about how the old guy does it and concentrate on doing your own thing.

There are many ways to skin a cat and I bet if any of us on here went to work in another’s shop there’d be differences in technique but that doesn’t always mean one is right and the other is wrong. Keep going, concentrate on doing the job correctly (or as correctly as the situation allows) and the speed will come. :rock

Oh, and as for the DA question I use mine wherever possible.

Thanks guys. I will try to do that. Ran into another snag with the old guy today. Anything I order has to go through him and he doesn’t like spending money. I told him I wanted to get some foam backed sand paper today. He told me to use a rock!! Ugh. I gotta do something here!! I think its time for a meeting with the chief.

You need to meet with management and ask who is running the show, the old guy or the manager?Tell him your concerns and ask if something can be done so it is fair for everyone,if he is running the show deal with it or maybe its time to move on to a better run shop.

The old guy is the manager sadly.

What u need to do is learn the products u have as in what can u get that does the same thing but cost less. Painting over 400 is okay, takes a lil more, but it can be done, how ever you seal over 320 da which cuts faster………
See here u use a more aggressive paper, but you have to seal , but with sealing, base will cover faster allowing u to get the job done faster, giving the protection needed, & being done right. But if your being forced to stay with the 400, learn to final sand your primer with da, da always gives a finer scratch. Much easier to paint over.

There are plenty guys here that use ppg products, including me, & have used some in the past. Your best advantage is to,ask if u want to get ahead. As well as the other products u use in the shop, including equipment. Especially paint guns, if they tell u a gun is crap listen, they have used them all.

Do u see where im going with this. What u need to do is learn how to present the pros & cons..how ever u need to be prepare to back up,your game.
& maybe for the time being maybe play by his game, learn what u can or need from us, buy good equipment as well as paint guns, they really make a difference.

One thing is for sure, the old guy will make sure u know your place. One thing u will learn & we all will tell u, yes we always want to do things the right way, but @ times u just can’t weather its a time issue or the boss wants it done a certain way. That will always b the same..

IMO I think you need to suck it up and realize its his show and play by his game, nothing is going to change while he is there. With that being said you would be better off to look for a good shop to work at and stay there until you do.After hearing your complaints about the place I would just move on.
yes it will work fine.A da is the old school sander that you can lock the weight on the bottom and it will be like a grinder, put the weight back and its an orbital sander.A palm sander is like a dynabrade.
Spot on a lot of people dont know the difference between a D.A. and a sander

D.A = Dual Action Sanding and grinding

Regular sander such as as dynabrade is just for sanding and generally has a smaller orbit of around 5mm
