Hi everybody, been reading some of the posts for the past month. I started in the business in the early 80’s collision, resto and finally painting. I have not made a living doing body work for several years but now I have a 40X60 building that is my new playground.
June 2, 2009 at 3:40 pm #14564When I got out of the business we used PPG mostly. back then I did alot of Kandy’s and Pearls and those were shot with House of Kolors products. The work I will be doing now will be completes, everything from motorcycles to ?. It will be just my stuff mainly. What do you recommend?
Welcome Kevin! You found the right forum. A 40×60 man cave…now that’s plenty of room for one man.
Materials… There’s plenty out there to choose from. But if you want great materials with excellent support,
look into SPI products. Several forum members here – including myself – are using it.Besides color, just about everything is covered.
Let’s see some pics of the man cave!

Fairly new around here myself Kevin so it’s nice to not be the new boy at last 😀
June 3, 2009 at 3:45 pm #14614I will post some pics. I have half of the concrete already poured, and the other half of the floor is getting a drain and radiant heat. I live on a thirty acre acreage so my Morton Buildings fit right in. I have my Bobcat and a couple John Deers parked in there right now, when it dries up I’ll kick those out and take pictures. I have questions on the SPI paint system, but a more pressing question is does anybody have any experience with these booths? http://www.rekoil.com.au/ I might have a chance to buy a down draft reasonable from a shop that built a new building and dont want to move it. I’m not sure I want that booth taking so much space so I need to give them an answer on the down draft.
June 4, 2009 at 1:40 am #14622I thought about T-8’s that would swing down from the ceiling that would be located in the correct location when the booth is opened up. This way the side lights could swing up and hug the ceiling when not in use. The ceiling lights would be flush mount in the ceiling, I would use fixtures that are meant for a booth for those. The two downsides I see to this setup is: It’s a draw through booth, and I wonder if i would get any kind of “paralax’ effect from the side lights shining throught the plastic material. Keep in mind this is my shop, not a for hire scenario. I have read enough posts on this forum to know there are smart thinkers lurking here. The thought of this idea appeals to me. Ok point out some other thoughts I may have overlooked.
You can’t have enough lights. And shining through plastic doesn’t sounds adequate at all.
Seems like you have enough space for a dedicated booth. Something you can build yourself.
Study commercial booths and the strategically placed light fixtures. This may give you some ideas: http://autobody101.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10122&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
