I got into the onsite paint repair business back in 1989-90…however…I went to work for my brother and that didn’t work out. A few years later I got back into the business full time but in the meantime I had an insider in the business (my Father, who told me everything he knew that was going on in my brothers company!)

I have run my own full time business for around 12 years now. I have learned a lot much of which is what not to do!

My philosophy has always been, Don’t think you know everything and don’t think everything you are doing is right, but don’t fix what isn’t broken!

I think one mistake many people make is assuming they have had proper training simply because it seems their customers are happy.

I cannot tell you how many times I have commented on something I know is flawed and the person says..”I have never had any complaints!”

The problem with this is assuming the people you aren’t getting complaints from actually will complain! Maybe they have no idea what’s wrong with your repair is even your fault!

For example…Lets say you wet sand and buff a repair but you do not get all the sand scratches because the compound hides the scratches. Do you think the customer knows this? NO. They have no clue.

I had one of my customers tell me a couple months ago something I painted “reacted”. I get there and look at it…the wet sand scratches weren’t all gone…it took me 30 seconds to fix!

I personally believe experience and humility are the most important qualities one needs to have in this business.

LOL…I didn’t get that at first…my Father passed away back in 2004 so I no longer have the inside scoop…and my brother is very secretive. It really is a laugh. He owns a Colors On Parade franchise up (for me) in NC. I’m in Florida. Let me see if I can find his website. Hers a post about him. LOL. http://forums.nasioc.com/forum/showthread.php?p=18718783
