Im looking for an easy diy method of painting soft vinyl . Im not looking to use any special vinyl painting product cuz they seem to suck . I need a sure fire way to spray base coat clear or some single stage. issues I see are soft vinyl areas such as door panels and parts of the dash and last issue the textured surface …..should this be sanded and smoothed out? should I use obviously adhesion promoter but should I use a sealer or can I get away with using a 2K sufacer/ sealer on this surface? sholud I bondo or polyester putty the soft vinyl areas to create a smoother and more rigid suface? any tips even if it may seem like hackery would be greatly appreciated

Some paint systems have a vinyl resin that can be mixed with the base toners. Chroma base had this as does PPG. I believe in both they have you clean and lightly abbrade the surface, apply adhesion promoter then the mixed vinyl paint. As far as I recall no primer or sealer is needed. I have used it in DuPont and it seemed durable after drying

Sounds like you want a glossy finish like the exterior of the vehicle? If so there are a few ways. Either you can fiberglass over the soft parts with 3 or 4 layers of matt, smooth out, prime, paint. Or you can do like this: http://www.refinishnetwork.com/component/kunena/8-auto-body-repair/26742-custom-dashboard#26946 As for the hard plastic I usually sand a bit of the texture out, clean with a plastic cleaner, adhesion promoter, high build 2k primer, block it out, prime again, sand and then paint.

Some may disagree with me but this works for me. Instead of vinyl dye (expensive and not all that good) I usually spay a urethane base with a little urethane hardner added to the base. It dries well and seems to last as long as the dye. A little adhesion promoter never hurts.
