Hey guys, I am in the process of repainting my car for the second time. I have begun to sand the existing single stage flat red with 400, and have sanded through to my original clear. My car was originally red before the respray, so it is just a few shades lighter where it was sanded through. My question is, do you suggest I spray a sealer down before spraying my new basecoat? The new paint is a dark metallic brown.

I’m thinking I wont have any adhesion issues with the basecoat and single stage flat red, because they are made by the same company (TCP Global.)

    Thank you for your help.

    P.S. The car in question:

That’s what I was thinking also, just wanted another opinion. Thank you!

I’ll order a gallon of SPI black sealer tonight.

You could also just apply the sealer over your breakthoughs, the only concern I’d have otherwise would be lifting if you apply the base coat over those area’s. Sealing the whole job won’t hurt but if you’ve already painted the car once your getting your mil thickness up and your paint durability can decrease, may want to consider skipping the sealer for that reason. I don’t think it will make a huge difference either way but something to consider.

If I do skip the sealer, should I sand over the 400 grit areas with 800 since the brown is a fine metallic?

400 for sealer. 600 for base.

if it were me i would seal it just to help eliminate wrinkling or edge mapping of all the burnthrough spots, especially if its a metallic. spi sealer locks up nice and quick to help with this. 400 hand sanding is a bit too coarse but 400 with a softpad on a da will be finer and ok otherwise 600 if no sealer or hand handing.
