Hey GM guys (Ben, and whoever else)

How in the crap do you remove this panel? Did I miss something here? These 4 studs just spin…. did they use a metal bolt just glued into the plastic trim? LAME!

Gotta love spinning metal studs in a plastic panel. the stud should be threadded into the panel. as you are turning them does it appear as the trim is being pushed away from the gate. if that is the case just keep it up. the panel will come off with the studs still on the gate. if not then you have to hold the studs and turn the nuts out with a wrench. the ends of the studs should look like a torx bit. you can use a reverse torx socket to hold the stud so you can break the nut lose with a wrench (kinda like you have to do with swaybar links )

if i remember correctly there are 4 or 2 plastic clips that have to be depressed even after u remove the nuts. look behind the wiper motor

I figured I just stripped the first one, went on to the next…. nope. I noticed the stud was spinning, and that’s where I stopped. I’ll to see if I can get some vise grips on the end of EVERY ONE while I loosen the sticky nuts… on paint covered threads….. over locktite….. GM needs to die :deadhorse

    thanks for the confirmation fellas

My coveralls say GM Goodwrench…but sometimes jobs require a bad wrench. Just grab the plastic part and rip it off with your hands. Either glue it together or buy a new one :rofl

I don’t remember if they are threaded on both ends like ding said, or if the other end is just a rectangular piece that is supposed to “not” spin in the cheap brittle plastic. Try like you will with the vise grips. If that fails, then I am serious about ripping it off. Gently pry the panel to put the point of stress just where the stud is. If done “properly” you will just snap off a tiny plastic tap that holds the metal stud in. After it is all apart you can glue the stud in solid.

    Stupid GM junk…

I’ve gotten a bunch of GM parts lately with “made in Korea” stickers on them. Why not just save the $3000 and buy a kia in the first place :lol1

Well after some struggling I just carefully pried the thing off.

Have any of you guys used ‘rubber-toughened’ CA glue? It’s magical. for little glue jobs like this, gluing the metal studs back into the plastic trim, It’s quick and easy, and quite strong. it’s even faster than the duramix 2 part fast cure, takes less time, doesn’t use any fancy tips. It’s great, but like all CA you’ve got to have the activator or it will take hours to cure on it’s own.
