Water floor downdraft booth

Hey guys anyone here use a water floor downdraft booth? I spray in one and im geting sick of cleaning out the trap and filter for the pump we seem to get alot of sludge build up. I try and put fresh water in atleast once a week. Aparently before i was there they used a chemical called snow flake and use to keep the water crystal clear but use to stuff the pump because of the chemical being to aggresive.. Just interested in what others do to combat this problem. :cheers
