How many of you guys are spraying waterborne paints? We have been switched since about the first or the year spraying RM Onyx. I have both my likes and dislike of the system.. I am looking to see if anyone has tried the PPG system or even the Dupont system yet? Long story short we are looking to change lines, I will get into more detail later.. Just looking for some opinions on different systems.. I have been to the Sikkens training center to look at their stuff and was impressed.. Just trying to get a feel for other systems at this point.. Would like to switch in the next month.. Thanks!
Haven’t tried any waterborne paints yet. Many shops are having issues of one sort or another.
Lately i’ve been trying out Transtar NoMix (low VOC); did 2 tri coat jobs with excellent results.
Of course, the guy who did the color match is very good. The base is very thick and covers
extremely well. Also been trying out Limco Supreme, over all, it sucks, but extremely cheap
which is great for just that, cheapie jobs. Though the color match isn’t great (metallics), i can
pass the savings on to customers (around $12 bucks a pint). And, i still have plenty of Chromabase,
old stock that i’ve doubled or trippled the mixes for popular colors and regular accident prone customers.AnonymousJune 2, 2009 at 9:45 pm #14591i’ve just sprayed a little bit here and there, been to dupont and basf training centers to see them. The dupont one really impressed me, covers in 1 1/2 coats back to back.
June 2, 2009 at 10:53 pm #14593I’ve been ‘wet’ for about 4 years now. I’ve used a bit of Max Meyer here and there, ~ 2 years on Lechler Hydrofan, ~ 18 months on PPG/NEXA Aquabase, and we recently switched to DeBeer 900 series.
Lechler & DeBeer are pretty good for budget lines, but Aquabase was excellent. Great coverage on just about any colour (double headed wet coat + light control coat), and very good colour matching.
June 3, 2009 at 5:08 am #14602Why the change of heart Joe,a couple of months ago you said the sikkens system was crap??Anyway we have been using autowave for 2 months with no problems,I got alot out the course at the sikkens training center in vancouver.PPG is very similar to sikkens but have heard color match is not great.I have no complaints, great color match and real nice gloss.
June 3, 2009 at 5:40 am #14606Your kidding yourself if you think BASF is cheaper, dupont is pricey with 4 increases per year. You could use whatever primer you want with autowave.Did you have someone check out your booth,if it works with rm it will work with autowave. You have a few choices besides superior for clear.Color match is very good.
Yeah I was a Sikkens customer for almost 10 years before I switched to BASF.. BASF is about 15% less right now with my discount than autowave.. I would use the HS clear if I switched back, that is what we were using.
If you are looking at akzo nobel you should have a look at Lesonal it is their cheaper brand, it uses the same chips and variants as its dear counterpart Sikkens.
I am told for every ten lesonal mixing shemes installed akzo install one sikkens scheme.
June 3, 2009 at 3:04 pm #14611I use Dupont and am happy with it. No real color match issues. It covers very good and seems to dry pretty good. The shop I work at had used Sikkens for 20 years before switching. He says there is a big difference in cost.
June 3, 2009 at 3:45 pm #14613Color match issues with basf. Thats just one thing you dont usually hear. Did you get a lot of cars that bondo worked on before  What does your jobber have to say. Are the colormax chips correct and the color is off when mixed?
Yeah we have been having issues with color match on most of the German stuff. Which is kinda funny.. Most of the domestic cars have been fine.. They are close to the color chips but not always perfect which can make picking a match fun.. We just did an 08 Passat LA7T that had 7 variants and 36 field formulas! That was a fun one.. Some of the colors that covered really well in the Diamont line dont cover for crap with the new stuff. But others cover in pretty much one coat.. Its just to much hit or miss with this system.. Seems like we really arent using much less than solvent and it is more costly. After looking at numbers over the last 6 months it is has cost me about 21% more using the new system vs. the old.. I did think about switching back to Diamont, but we have already made the upgrades for water so we are going to stick with it. More than likely wont be BASF.. I did attend the Sikkens training about a year ago and really think I might switch back depending on final numbers. Plus they are about 2 miles down the road from us. But I want to look at a few others before I decide..
June 4, 2009 at 3:49 pm #14624If I could recommend anything it would be to demo as many as you could. I always here of someone who likes one brand and the next guy says it’s awful. See what works in your shop for you!
I know in my area Sikkens has lost alot of customers over price. Their water is higher also. It is very nice looking though.
The one I wouldn’t try is Sherwin Williams. Everybody I have talked to that used it said it was bad.
