well guys due to being a part time painter and hobbyiest I’ve not had the fortune of any courses or tutoring in the use of waterborne paints.
I will be begining workin part time in a local automotive refinishers next month but I’d rather have a good idea of where I’ve been going wrong before i start there (obviously looks alot better )
the biggest issue i had recently was on a set of mk3 golf plastic arches. I gave them a good prep, plastic primed them, then gave them a good coat of upol high build 2k primer. This was flatted back, then primed again to remove any of the plastic texture. This was wet and dry flatted back and then the parts were painted with aquamax waterborne basecoat. Gave it 3 coats of basecoat allowing each one to flash off. Then they were laquered with 2k wasa laquer. The arches were looking incredibly shiney and had a nice smooth coat of laquer once I’d finished. I stayed in the shed till they went tacky, then locked up and went home and left them for the weekend. When i returned back the laquer finish on the parts was dull and it’d really lost its shine. The finish is almost as if I’d painted them with a satin or matt finish laquer. The coating is still there but it just isnt like finishes I’ve managed to get previously with the same prep and painting techniques. Did i do something wrong .Also the shed isnt heated and isnt exactly the most weather proof…but the weather was warm that day and the shed was cooking. Not sure if that’d make a difference…
anyone got any idea of why the laquer may have gone dull ??? Or why it’d lost its lustre ??

I’ll put my money on the 1st suggestion. I did go for the laquer a little quicker than normal. I usually leave the basecoat to sit for an hour after the final coat..just to make sure… but in this case i went for it earlier as the basecoat seemed to be flash off quite quickly.
airflow in the shed isnt an issue….its like a bloody wind tunnel at the best of times. hahahahah
