I would like to see a close up of your vacuum attatchment you made and how all that works. I’m surprised nobody else has posted pics of there shops
AnonymousJune 5, 2009 at 4:39 pm #14641That shop looks awesome…..inspiring!
Here’s a bit more on what we are using:

it uses the air from your line to stuff the dust in the bag, it apparently uses some technology from their furnace filter division. the little bags hold quite a bit. The sander is only about $60 (3m gave us ours) it has some sort of turbine that sucks it up and moves the dust in the bag. very easy system to implement and the bags are very easy to get used to. It looks a bit bulky but it really isn’t that bad after using them for a bit. The norton multi-air was a bit of a pain at times.
this is the multi-air:

and the paper was not as good!
Now that’s CLEAN! Yeah, i don’t see any work going on. Where does all the serious work
happen? Where is the frame rack?
We don’t do any heavy stuff here as we’re not a crash repair shop. I work for a large car supermarket with around 1000 cars on site, and when they are bought in they come through the paintshop to have any minor damage rectified before resale. It’s mainly two or three panels per car; minor dints, scrapes and stone chips, stuff like that. We do some bolt on panel replacement, but can’t do anything major as we haven’t even got a welder here! :blink:I’m getting on a bit now so I’m glad to have left that side of the business behind me. Give me the easy stuff any day, lol.
The pressure here comes not from the complexity of each job, but the throughput. I have three guys working under me, and we have to push out 15 or more cars a day to keep the bosses happy. That’s something like 30-40 panels to be prepped, painted and polished each and every day. I’ve also got a SMART repair guy turning out a similar number of jobs so I have a hell of a lot of organising to do, as well as staying over 100% efficient myself.
June 6, 2009 at 9:16 pm #14663Ha! Yes I’ve worked in places like that Han, Up to my ankles in filler dust and semi scrap panels stacked all over the place ‘just in case’ 😛
June 15, 2009 at 7:58 pm #14723Ok I bought the 3m self generating vacuum sander. I bought the 5″ general use model and it works well. For the sake of conversation what size 5-6 ” sanders and grit’s of paper do you guy’s prefer. Also my jobber was telling me to buy the fine sander as well to cut clearcoat (3000 grit) instead of wet sanding. What are your thoughts?
I might just get a 6″ sander myself.
For 80,120,220 and 320 grit papers, I highly recommend: http://spi.forumup.org/about2347-spi.html
