It is completely dependent upon the clear you are spraying and your personal techniques. Personally a 1.2 sounds too small to me. You should experiment with different set ups. Remember, fine atomization can be achieved either with air pressure or mechanical dispersement. In order to obtain maximum transfers efficiency you need to find a balance between the two. Again, the brand of clear you use dictates your decision. I spray Spies Hecker with an older iwata lph400. 1.3 head and a silver cap. I have not polished anything for many months beyond small areas. A small run or a piece of dust. I had to relearn my set up after switching from BASF a few years back. Experiment and don’t blame the paint. I have two boxes of SATA paint guns that just collect dust. I know a painter that sprayed Standox for 12 years with an iwata just like mine. The shop sold and now he sprays NEXA. He switched guns to a SATA 4000 with a 1.3 . He loves it. Different brands require changes. Good Luck!

well , like above post , different materials needs different techniques. I use DeVilbiss GTI Pro 1,3 with T1 aircap for MS and HS clears . For VOC clears from Standox ( VOC 2K , VOC Platinum … ) i use SATA 4000 RP 1,3 on 2,0 bar pressure , these clears goes in 0,5+1 full coat application and SATA is fast as hell.
I also use new GTI Pro Lite with 1,2 , this one i little messy because of 3 air caps ( T10,T20,T30) , im still learning with this gun.
For base coat i use GTI Pro 1,3 with H1 aircap on 2,0 bars , even spread of metallics , even when you have 2 or 3 pearl colors in mix there’s no clouding , but you have to be careful with finish effects , the pressure have to be below 0,5 bars on nozzle ( 1,3-1,6 inlet pressure )
When i work on 3 or 4 stage colors i use SATA 4000 HVLP , really fast gun , i must calculate +300 grams of color with this gun but it pays of when you see job done .

Not sure I agree with different products needing a different gun,but I do agree with different clears needing a different fluid tip and technique etc.For all out speed and a nice finish most here have not used this gun but a sata jet 90 with a 1.4 and the SL nozzle set is deadly fast.I have found that the 3000 rp with a 1.4 is pretty close to the jet 90 for speed.I think the 4000 rp is the slowest out of the 3 rp’s but has a very nice finish.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! Although im open to more suggestions I have about narrowed it down to three possibilities. Upgrading to the 1.4 in my 3000rp (which ive read is faster than the 4000), getting a tekna prolite and seeing how it does w clear (which ive talked to some other guys who say it works exceptionally well for base), and the Iwata WS400 which people are saying lays out a slicker finish than the LS version or even the 3000 or 4000 but mayh be a tad slower. My decision isn’t going to be based solely on speed. And to be honest I think im going to order all 3 this week. Heck its what we make our money with right?

Anybody who has these setups feel free to chime in here!

sure like the finish we get from the pro lite with the 1.4 didnt spray clear for shit with the 1.3 not as fast as a sata rp but it does lay a really nice finish

When you guys talk about speed do you refer to how fast you move over the panel or less of an overlap as that gun lays more out ?
I ask because i have many top end guns (supernava,ws400 bellaria, gti pro base and clear guns and also a sata 3000 1.3 rp digital)
I have not used the sata much as we used a crap piss thin shitty clear at our shop and the sata just lay it on too heavy but i have managed to talk my boss into getting a better but not perfect clear to use so maybe time to break the sata out as its a hs clear we now use (octoral/valspar univarnish) any tips if anyone used or uses this clear ? Thanks

IMO a fast gun is defined as putting out a large amount of fluid but still atomizes the product very well.A fast gun will allow you to use either a 50% overlap or 75% and still move at a great pace. There is nothing wrong with the guns you have, the gti pro’s have a great reputation.A sata 3000 rp with a 1.4 is a fast gun,the 1.3 is not too bad.I would just use whatever your comfortable with.If the rp puts out too much for you or makes it look thick jack up your air pressure, move in closer to the panel, move faster.

Thanks jason- i think the problem was the thin cheap clear we used when i was trying the sata out but now we use the hs valspar univarnish i think it would be better,i did a white tri stage pearl today and as you know its harder to see it going on a white car and as it was a tri stage i opted for the w400 so gonna give the sata a crack tomorow mate

Tried the sata on Friday on a large van panel in silver and it was really nice finish ! Set at 2 bar and 2.5 turns out on fluid close in and fast and it sprayed the valspar really nice !
It was quite cold tho in our shop as there was another job in booth and where there was no basecoat on the top part of the panel it sagged a little but never ran ! A little wetter on that bit and it would of gone but it held up luckily ! Phew ! Lol

We have a few guns available for clear and I have used a few Sata guns inc the nr2000 rp with both 1.2 and 1.3 ,many sprayers chose to change to the 1.2 from a 1.3 to slow them down a bit ,I myself loved them with a 1.2 for the finish quality ,we have a 3000 rp 1.3 at work ,its is more than fast enough for most jobs and I suspect a 1.4 would not suite my style which is a more relaxed pace ,the only time I like a lot of product and speed is when doing commercials

My current weapon of choice is an OPTIMA Trilogy AS with a 1..3 ,fast gun but with a superfine finish ,not used anything that can match it so far including supernovas

If I want really really fast I break out my old AID Superhawk with a conventional 2.0 set up ,it is basicly a Binks 630 rebranded for AID with slightly different style gun body

Hi paul have you tried out a sata 4000 ?would like to try one out as they will come down in price now the 5 is out ?
Im loving the iwata w400 bellaria i had from you mate on the smaller jobs and side outs its peach and so light ! Be sure to let me know if you have any othes come by ! I bought a supernova a while ago from antony the old roberlo rep and i think he bought it from you lol

    November 17, 2014 at 12:34 pm #47955

Not tried one yet but from the off most reports I heard where sprayers prefered the 3000

    November 17, 2014 at 12:41 pm #47956

yeh everyone who had one of those Bellarias loves them ,wasnt me roberlo had the nova off I have only sold two of them over the years but i can get them new at the right price and all Iwata guns and airbrushes

    November 17, 2014 at 10:56 pm #47958

Sound mate, the supernova clear gun i have is it the same as a base one ? Is it a different nozzle for base ? It never gets used now i have the w400 bellaria and im not over keen on my gti pro as a base gun lol

    November 17, 2014 at 11:14 pm #47959

I believe the OB nozzles are different but what the difference is is beyond me ,my mate has the Caterham OBS 1.3 and prefers it for clear over his original 1.4 nova ,but many of the supernovas end up on ebay without much use with the reason “cant get on with it” ,personally I think the Bellaria is the better deal and better gun for clear applications and my mate who had one off me used it for a base wash which his other guns wouldn’t lay correctly

glad it is serving you well 😉
