As above, it shouldn’t make any difference to how you approach the job.
I’ve even applied solvent base after putting on a water based ground coat, and vice versa. As long as you’re generous with the drying times of each there’s no need to worry.
January 31, 2013 at 9:28 pm #40899Always 🙂
I tried it out today with a red mica – Fiat 132 – and the base goes on so much better at 30% :rock I thought hiding power would suffer but it didn’t. One full wet coat had it covered. The base also seemed to dry more quickly too, I’m guessing down to the better atomisation / finer droplet size.
I ought to know better by now, always trust the tech sheet rather than what a colleague tells you!
January 31, 2013 at 11:36 am #40895I don’t know the colour but being 10 years old maybe it hasn’t been re-formulated in the new high-covering silvers. If it contains a lots of 913B or 913C then it will have a fairly low hiding power.
Was there an undercoat recommended for it? I formulated my own for these kinds of silvers but a quick coat of one of the value shades would have been a good idea. Either GS905 or GS906 maybe.
January 31, 2013 at 11:27 am #40893I’ve managed to find the TDS and it conflicts with what I was told by some margin!
January 30, 2013 at 11:21 pm #40861
Start at 40%. On tough colors with mainly DF toner go up to 50% if needed. DF covers very well so it won’t hurt coverage. It makes a world of difference. BMW 354 at 50% is a cake walk.
Christ almighty. No wonder I’m struggling!
I know I’m only smart repairing bit I did the full side on a Ford Fiesta today in Moondust silver (mainly DF)
I’ve not had any formal training on autowave, just my boss showing me once how to use the program to mix paint. He said to just add a splash of reducer. I bet I’m not even using 10%. No wonder there’s so much texture in the base!
January 30, 2013 at 11:11 pm #40860I wondered where that job had ended up…. :rofl
Seriously though that’s pretty shocking, but I wouldn’t say uncommon. Some guys just want there cars smoothing as cheaply as possible and there’s always some bodge artist waiting to take their money!
January 30, 2013 at 11:08 pm #40859
and I hear the iwatas arent really fast. If you had to do a complete, would your arm fall off
Probably 😆
My 1.3 is a bit slow for multiple panels, about the same as the 4000 RP 1.2 I demo’d, but I used a mates with the newer 1.3 HD (high delivery) and it was much better. His was also the newer EVO version Supernova that has the adjustment knobs screwed on properly, so they don’t fall off all the time like mine do!

Nice jobs there I must say. think i’m gonna throw my satas away and order a few iwatas
Hey! Less of the Iwata bashing :p 😆

January 28, 2013 at 10:07 pm #40770
I love my iwata guns I have a few w200 w400 and supernova each all for different tasks I love them fantastic guns But the others I have not used much to say if there any better
You’ll be fine if you do go on to Debeer then, the area tech (Pete) loves his Iwata’s! In fact after using my ‘nova a few times he ended up buying a pair for each of the tech guys.
I’ve mentioned it elsewhere on here though but after the move to 900+ with the high strength tinters, I found an old SATA 2000 HVLP did a better job with the base than the W400 WBX I had been using, and the ‘nova base gun I tried. I did a bit of work with Pete and he was taking the results to Iwata to see if they could work something out to cure the “problem”. It seems the Iwata’s were just too good, lol, over atomising the base. He was due to try out some different set ups etc but I moved jobs and haven’t seen him since.

Personally my sealer gun of choice is an Iwata Supernova Hybrid with a 1.4 and the gold basecoat aircap.
I knew I’d get you into those Supernova’s eventually Ryan 😆
January 28, 2013 at 9:52 pm #40768We don’t get the purple cap here in the UK which is probably why you haven’t seen it DC, and to be fair evoh I don’t think it’s designed for the W400, only the low pressure LPH400 version. That gun has 3 caps available, a silver for (mostly) clear, gold for base or clear (similar to our WBX) and the purple cap which is meant to help out on the last few percent of really tricky base colours.
So I can’t really help evoh as I haven’t used the purple cap, and as I say, I don’t really think it’s meant for the W400. If you can get it where you are then you might want to have a go with the WBX set up. I found it extremely good for basecoat and clear alike 🙂
January 28, 2013 at 9:43 pm #40766
belive me you cannot change the boses ways and if you keep fighting with him you might loose your job.
Yup, that’s exactly how I lost my last job!
In future if I think there’s a better way to do something I’ll politely point it out, but do whatever the boss decides in the end 🙂
