As Jack says, I sprayed DeBeer for a couple of years in a production shop. I was averaging 60-70 cars a week, even managed up to 100 a few times so I’d say it works very well in that kind of environment.

The ICRIS computer system is one of the best I’ve ever used. I know of a tech rep who would use it as his first choice when looking up hard to find colours, despite having every other paint scheme and system at his disposal. It is also updated weekly via (very simple) internet download, so no messing about waiting for update discs and it’s always bang up to date with the latest colours. If the lab has it, you have it 🙂 The colour box was pretty comprehensive too and as I understand it the chips are all sprayed rather than being printed like some so what you saw on the chip was what you were going to get.

Colour matching on the whole was very good, but when they get it wrong they get it really wrong!! 😆 However, considering the number of cars and different colours we got through I only remember about 5 occasions in a couple of years where we had to call the colour guy out to sort a problem. I can easily live with that kind of percentage!

The system does have a lot of coloured ground coats to help coverage. Initially I thought this would be a pain in the rear but once you get used to it it’s the opposite. There are a few that you use often so I’d have a bit of each mixed up at all times. One quick coat of the ground colour and your base would cover extremely well, saving time and money in the long run (less coats of an expensive pearl or xyrillic for example). They were slowly phasing these out though after introducing a range of 13 high-strength tinters which gave much improved covering power for some colours, especially silvers.

I’m sure that’ll give you enough to chew on for now, but I’m here if you have any more specific questions 🙂

Oh, and as for my overall opinion compared to other brands – if I were ever to open my own shop DeBeer would be my first choice.

    Andy.

Manback – if it really is the same as NEXA then I’m not surprised you had trouble with the blacks. I always had trouble with them. Silvers I’d often do edge to edge but I’d almost always blend the blacks, even solid ones. I just don’t think they had a proper black on the scheme, and that Citroen EXY was brown from what I remember.

Kansas – swapping from 320 block to 500 on a DA is quite a jump which may be why your guy is leaving some scratch marks in the jobs. I’d suggest at least that he uses a guide coat so he can see exactly when all of the straight sanding lines have gone. Although if it were me I’d be tempted to DA with 400 instead to cut the scratches out quicker and make it less of a jump. I’ve no experience with the sealer you are using but I haven’t tried one yet that won’t fill a 400 DA scratch.

Xchaser – I used the WBX for years as a base gun and found it very good. A product change saw me starting to struggle with it though so I swapped it for an older NR200 hvlp which made life much easier.

So yes, a great base gun in my experience but I’d suggest a demo with your particular brand of base first 🙂

I thought you were looking at the new set up though, the bellaria? Looks like they’ve combined the robustness of the classic W400 with the thinner, flatter spray pattern of the supernova. Should be a winner in my eyes but I’d have to try one first.
i use a Walcom Geo ,sensational for blends
Any links to where I could pick one up in the UK?

I’ve seen you mention them before but couldn’t find a dealer. The low air consumption in particular interests me, especially since I’ve moved to working mobile for a bit so need to keep air usage as low as I can.

Having use both of the ones you mention Ben, I went for an Iwata LPH80 1.2 with E4 cap.

I find it a great little gun, and if I hadn’t limited myself by opting for the 70CC cup I’d be using it for larger jobs. I have used it with 650ml PPS cups but it’s very top heavy since the gun is so small it’s almost toy like. With mini PPS I think I’d be onto a winner.

    Good reply Nick.

I’ve also been on FC+ for a long time but have thought about trying the new Ultra. Based on your review I think I’ll give it a go.

Am I right to think somebody with their own tools and self sufficient is more appealing to employ than somebody without tools?
They would be to me. Not just because they have their own equipment, but more because it shows a commitment to the trade as Charlie mentions. If they are willing to put their hard earned cash back into something that could make them more efficient (instead of wandering around looking for shop tools) then it shows a good attitude.

When running a shop I’ve had new guys turn up with nothing but what they were stood up in, but some came with a full tool box, masks, DA’s, guns etc.

I had two prep guys working under me for over 2 years without owning so much as a trim tool. They used to just use my gear. Must have screwed them up a bit when they let me go!!

They look much better. Nice one.

Before they looked washed out, particularly on a car of that colour.

correct me if im wrong but compliancy doese not automaticaly require water ,
A pedantic point I think Paul, but I’m happy to correct what I said because of it:

Maybe the OP doesn’t have a choice. I’ve worked in a few bodyshops where it was waterbourne colour or nothing.

I don’t disagree that solvent would probably be the better choice, but one has to work with the products one has to hand sometimes and I have used a tinted clear waterbourne basecoat more than once without issue.
i can see absolutly no advantage to useing waterbased for such an aplication as your are just makeing extra work for an inferior job
Maybe the OP doesn’t have a choice. Certainly when I was in a compliant bodyshop it was water or nothing 🙂

I’ve done a few the way Jason mentions, putting a bit of black tinter in a clear base. It does the job, but I think a candy would give a much more even effect.
