Sorry, that can’t be OEM BMW paint – there’s not enough peel in it :p :rofl
December 5, 2011 at 11:14 pm #34518
Are you using red cream hardener in your filler and a 1k primer?
I’d be asking the same question. Plus – what exactly do you mean by “bleeds”, just to make sure we’re all talking about the same thing 🙂
If you can see a kind of stain where the filler is then you may well have used too much hardener in it.
December 4, 2011 at 11:55 pm #34506
why the need for a uk based forum when you’ve got global right here :P
Oh, you know – product differences and stuff  It would never live up to this place though :rock
Ben – yes some manufacturers offer a hardener/activator, but I think Nick was just trying to illustrate and explain a particular problem that rears it’s head over here quite a bit, rather than seek a solution for himself.
Personally I’ve not had any of my jobs go that way, but I’ve had to repair plenty that have!
December 4, 2011 at 11:48 pm #34504Nice one. It’s good to have a break from the norm now and then.
He/she did a great job of the artwork too.

5l clear coat

Just to give you an idea of the scale of our operation – I usually get through one of those every 2 days when we’re busy!December 2, 2011 at 1:12 am #34457Ah, cool.
Alan is one name I haven’t heard but then you’re a lot further north than I am! 😆 Peter Moore lives in my hometown so I get to see him quite a lot.
Are you getting the computerised ICRIS system? If so then you’ll love it once you get to know you’re way around it. I’ve never used a system anywhere near as good, or as up to date. I download the weekly updates on my PC at home and load them onto the machine at work from a USB stick. Peter came to work one day and we mixed a field formula for a car I was having trouble with. It was sent to Holland, loaded on the database and available to the whole world by the following week. Can’t get much better than that!
By the way, I don’t used the wet bed technique. I’ve tried it, but this stuff blends so easily that I’ve never found the need.
Have fun :dnc
December 1, 2011 at 11:52 pm #34453A helpful post Nick, and that effect is something I’ve seen a lot.
Many people think the car has had a bad touch up job on an edge or something, until I explain.
By the way, if you know of a UK based painting forum then I’d be glad to hear about it. PM me if you’d rather 🙂

Yes brian well mainly allan the tech …offering training etc for the debeer range..realy helpfull guys and allan realy knows his stuff !
Are you not getting one of the DeBeer guys up for the training then? A good bunch of guys, particularly Peter.
If there’s anything specific you want to know just ask. There’s nothing in particular I can think of to warn you about except that, if the colour says it needs an undercoat, then use it! Might seem like a pain in the ass at first but trust me, it does make a world of difference and saves lots of time and money in the end.
On that score, I do know that some of their tinters are due for a re-vamp/upgrade soon to increase the covering power so don’t worry if you have the odd colour that takes an extra coat to cover – they are on it 😉
November 16, 2011 at 1:21 am #34218
all good advice here guys, if i can add one, before the air line exit, even before the regulator with the down pot, make a T down tube with a ball valve and empty it regularly by opening the ball valve, it works great, i did a bad drawing of it, here is the pic, excuse my lack of talent 😆
There is a drain down there to the left. Where else do you think that pipe’s going? 😆
In fact you can even see the yellow handle of the ball valve if you look closely 🙂
October 31, 2011 at 2:12 am #33932
I appreciate there will always be water but its never really been a problem before. I might replace the water trap it is as old as the compressor.
Is your compressor running more on this job than it has before? With a high duty cycle (pump running often) the air in your tank will be pretty warm (as you’ve noticed). If that’s the case then a water trap won’t be effective as there’s no real water to trap, it’s still vapour in the warm air. This is then condensing out as it cools in your air hose and coming out at the tool end.
As Mike explains, the only way is to get the air as cool as possible before it reaches the trap, then it’ll catch all that condensed water. This is how industrial refrigerated drying systems work, they chill the air to just above freezing to wring every ounce of moisture out. Clearly these units aren’t feasible for DIY use so I’ve used a series of copper pipes to achieve this, but it’s still not 100% effective. I really need more pipe length. Another option is to daisy chain into another tank which will have a similar effect.

October 23, 2011 at 9:55 pm #33749
Don’t even get me started on the “Tack and a Whack” 1- 1/2 wow clear coat application. :rofl
I call that “grip and rip” 😆
October 16, 2011 at 11:16 pm #33573
On the other hand, if you don’t need to worry about an exact colour too much and the price it great, buy it anyway. Then buy another litre (or however much you might need) of a similar colour blue and mix them together.
Or do what I regularly do – build up first with a coat or two of a similar colour. You’ll not need as much of your “proper” colour then. One good coat in the door shuts etc. will do it.
Not something I’d recommend if you’re looking for a perfect edge to edge match on an existing colour, but for a full respray it should work just fine. And it’s how my DeBeer paint system works for a lot of pearl colours. They generally have poor coverage, so there’s a wide range of solid groundcoats available. Some of them are almost exactly the same as the top coat, but without the “sparkle”. So you can get full coverage with one ground coat and one proper pearl coat, as opposed to several coats of pearl.
Just an idea…. 🙂
October 16, 2011 at 1:21 pm #33565Hiya,
Yes, get some pictures up when you can. We all love pics 🙂
And you’re right, any of the guns you mention will require a lot more air than you currently have.
October 11, 2011 at 11:51 pm #33494If you’re worried about the duct tape pulling off old paint, try what I do – a piece of low tack masking tape first, then a layer or two of dust tape over that 😉
