to much clear on silvers will darken them maybe?? so all u are doing is having clear at the end of your blend panels and that why darker up to the panel u never painted
I believe it is just that extra 2 mils or so of clear over the old clear changes the way the light refracts out. I’ve had similar issues with all clears. Usually it looks good in the sun, but occasionally it bites me in the a$$.

I may be using Sikkens now, but I am starting to rock the accelerator as well. Speed can be good, especially when you hose it on like me :lol1
yeah i love the accelerator, mostly just use it in the primer though.
Also tried using the superior hardener with energy pro clear, sprayed a little better
and didnt die at all 10 min at 160.
The accelerator is great for jobs that you need to reassemble immediately after baking (like bumper jobs). And they don’t die off at all.

I installed one similar to that on a lifted Ram 2500…used an engine hoist to install it.

it seems like they are actually a step ahead now based on their air bake clear, spreadable primer, etc. i used the ultra base for a few jobs and it covered pretty well but maybe after 4-5 coats. :chair besides that the price is ridiculously high for it.
I’ve used some Ultra 7000 and a little of the waterborne. SW has a few really good things…the clear is fast, most products have flex additive already in it etc…but overall, I agree with MoCoke, it is overpriced for what it is.

You are currently with Sikkens? WHat don’t you like about it? Up here (where basically everyone is using waterborne)Sikkens is considered one of the best systems.
I like Sikkens, and I’m on the west coast of Canada so ditto with the compliant products. It’s good, but unfortunately we are stuck with a crossdraft booth still. It’s pretty tough being productive in the cool weather without an air makeup using waterbourne (especially for 3+ panels). I’ve been with Sikkens for 8 years so I don’t know where it stands relative to the others, except that Sikkens is one of the most expensive paint lines. Glad to hear that it’s considered one of the best waterbase out there (what aspects?)

There is talk of compliant solvent coming in soon with Sherwin (ATX), and I’m pretty curious about it. I’ve tried the compliant Omni, which doesn’t cut it (no chips). A jobber dropped off some Transtar / NoMix to try but I’ve never even heard of them.

Who knows with the industry the way it is, I wouldn’t be surprised if all the brands bring out a compliant solvent line sooner than later. Cash grab.

I loved ACIII with XP and rapid act. I’m using the Lesonal ProAir LV which is even better than Energy Pro250 for our booth.
Where on the west coast are you?

There are several low VOC solvent base. Most are lower end products, so colour match likely isn’t the best. I believe Stone is using RM solvent with good success.

The Autowave is fast, easy to use and has good colour matches. The AWX I found to be slower, more transparent, required work to control solvents and colour matches weren’t great (although I am sure they are building their formula library as time goes on).

PPGs enviro base is a very fast base. Possibly the fastest drying base in my opinion. It is very similar to Autowave…
looks good in the pics ta me lild;) 😉 but most the time those boxes dont match the cab from the factory anyway i think its cuz the paint em at a diff factory so ya might have ta reshoot it with a color a lil more off than that ta bring it back ta tru pre accident condition nice job bubs:cheers :cheers
I usually butt boxes to cabs. With the Envirobase and Autowave we’ve had some great matches.

out of curiosity, why did you clear it, if you still have more colours to paint?

    March 10, 2011 at 4:36 am #29381

    Wow…friends shouldn’t let friends replace 1/4 panels
looks like it was fun since i dont see any rust. id like to service a cougar :p :p
Yeah…I was expecting a different kind of cougar

Looks like you were rather ambitious. Nice clean car to work with, what colour are you going to?
MoCoke You’d really give me a job in Jersey? I’d have to move all the way from Texas. My instructor was telling me he’s trying to get me work at this “International truck dealership” mostly painting said it pays really good money and he’s really trying to work it out for me before I graduate in december. But if I can make a living in Jersey I’m all for it.
Getting in at a heavy truck shop will give you some great experience. Painting those big guys, up and down ladders…lots of striping and multi-colour paint jobs will build you some great skills. After that, painting a puny civic fender will seem too easy
thank you for your help guys,

    RatStang;

thank you for clearing up on the information on air filtration. that was the information that i needed as i am not to familiar on this topic.

the filter i am looking for is to ONLY spray in booth. thats it. not for breathing.

    Ben

thanks for your reply, as i just wrote to RatStang, the filter is just for spraying in 1 booth only, no prep bays or air fed masks.

the compressor i have is a twin piston type, not sure on tank volume but the motor itself is rated at 620 litres per minute. giving that the gun i use is an Iwata supernova that consumes max 350 litres per minute.
please correct me if i am wrong but i think that my compressor is enough for my needs.
That should be adequate then. I think I would go with the Sharpe filters, should keep up to you fine. However, if your compressor is only able to put that amount of air out, it will be running a lot while you spray (creating heat and humidity). Having a secondary way of removing water may be a good idea such as cooling/condensing the air, if you have a big water issue, you don’t want to have to rely on the 3 stage filter too much.

    I think I’ve done up to 4…but I’m just a rookie. :lol1

    Great pic lild!

    fancy looking filters…

I am guessing the green ones I’ve seen in most shops are the same as the yellow ones you had there?

    March 6, 2011 at 10:20 am #29204

They all look like good quality filters.

Most shops I’ve worked in have had the Devilbiss or SATA filters. I am sure they would all work well, and the price on the Sharpe unit seems pretty good.

What are your needs (are you using it just for spraying in the 1 booth, or multiple booths/prep stall(s)?). Are you using the unit all day…are you using fresh air system in the booth too? How dry is your air to begin with?

Try to figure out the maximum air volume you might ever use and consider how hard you need the filter to work. My guess, however, is that any of the ones you are looking at should suffice.
