Did you read the part were they beat the rocker panels with a hammer to get the squirts to fit?

I dont know what they did to the quarter panels the guy goes on to say they got a bill from another reputable shop for over 12k to fix the car right unbelievable some one would do that to a guys car.

My kid wants to try some of these fiberglass kits on a some cars he keeps seeing how cheap they are on eBay and how cool they look I keep telling him yep but what they dont tell you is how many hundreds of hours they take to fit and finish. better off to stay away.

I am curious about that stuff too.
Like Stone said I’m afraid of what it would get on that I didn’t want it on so I haven’t tried it yet.

It sounds like a good idea though

Yes it needs to come apart
There is a right and a left cable and a drive gear that rolls them in the tracks, more than likely the drive gear is stripped as no one has taken it apart to clean and lube the thing in Many years.
(these should be cleaned and lubed at least every 2-3 years depending on use with White lithium grease)

Mark all the pieces of the tracks carefully also mark the cables where they intersect the drive gear.
Do not break the cable attach points were they attach to the roof rear lifting deals. They are part of the cable!
Remove all the forward track assembly drive gear assembly and all slide roof as far forward as possible Remove the Pin that goes in roof panel at the aft end of cable. The guides need to be all loosened up and partially removed. Also entire Headliner needs to be removed to gain access. The cable lifting deal is fragile and likely froze up don’t break it! or force ANY THING!!!! you might not be able to get a new cable for the car almost all were different lengths! often one of them is broke and that’s why the roof doesn’t work. if so you may be able to have it welded if done right it might work, but they are made from POT metal good luck.

Good news is Kelly Sunroofs MIGHT have a drive gear! he’s in Arizona some place no Internet sight he’s an Old gentleman very knowledgeable about all the roofs but not computer savvy.
The gear may be same gear in other Hand crank roofs of the same era. Don’t hold me too that! he may also have a cable or two for that car. I will look though my stuff and see if I can find his contact info for you if you like?

Hand crank roofs are the easy ones to get parts for as far as Chargers go as there were many more made! the Electric ones are extremely hard to find parts for drive gears are different in both.
Kelly has a few suppliers contracted to make a few parts such as the special seals he and another guy in Colo were working on having new cables manufactured. I have no idea how far they have gotten with the idea Both had drive gears I purchased cables and extra drive gears from them to have as spares.

I have had a few of these cars with this style roof all were made by American sunroof corporation

I figured when you got back it would be all done and gone at the pace you guys were going!

What happened with the Sun roof?
I seen they were basting it and around it (BAD idea!) If sand gets into those Aluminum cable guides it will eat them to shreds. Wont be too nice to drive gear either.
Was that an Electric one or Hand crank?
    Would it work at all?

I would make shipper have it fixed

They say to have separate tools for fixing alum than for fixing steel same tools just a different set, Hammer Dolley’s etc.
Only reason I can come up with is maybe just maybe you could possibly rub off the Alum Clad coating off some Alum onto your tools and then when you work on steel it will deposit on the steel causing a dissimilar metal corrosion type thing. Nothing you couldn’t fix first with some scotch brite cleaning your tools first.

I don’t know why? most all planes are made of alum I don’t use a separate set for fixing Jets or small planes
No one ever said that to me and I am an A&P mechanic, and there are no FAR’s on it that I know of.
And I am not alone skipping from planes to cars and back and forth. :rofl :exci

A&P= Certified by FAA Airframe and Power Plant mechanic, repair and modification to both.
    FAA = Federal aviation authority
    FAR’s= Federal aviation regulations

Perhaps who came up with this meant Grinding wheels?
Now that makes sense never put Aluminum on a Bench Grinder grinding wheels.
There are special ones you can but they cost a small fortune and if you buy them you’ll know the difference.
If you do grind alum on a steel grinding wheel the wheel can explode.
