Just have to be careful. Its pretty easy to get dry spray.

I seem to have better luck if I reduce the pressure a bit and try not to spray too wet.

Yeah I suppose it all depends on how you like to spray. Did a Nissan 370z today and it went better with about one turn in on the fluid. But I’d like to get my hands on the guy that decided the front bumper cover should have some flat color as well. That was a pain to mask off!!

Damn it! I tried to spray the last 2 bumper covers ultra flat. One today and one yesterday. Got a run in each of them. Wondering if I should have gone with the 1.3 tip (needle and nozzel is $140) to have gained a little control. Both were the covers with multiple fog light type holes and lots of curves and bulges. Both were done in ultra fast DC3000 PPG clear with the 1.4 at about 31 psi full fan and material at about 4″ and 75% overlap. Was a little cool at 63 degrees in the booth today.
I did a hood as well or i would have tried the mini on it.
How important is it to spray the whole thing in full passes. Meaning not stopping in the middle or whatever. I am a fairly short guy and the reach all the way around the cover is pretty scetchy for me.
They turned out real nice besides the runs, but not as good as some of the pics shown here (which was what I was trying to get). The horizontal parts were dead flat, but the sides had a small amount of texture. I want to be able to lay it all perfectly flat.
Also I may call tomorrow and see if I can demo a 3000 rp with a 1.3.

Take a look through here http://www.refinishnetwork.com/component/kunena/36-gallery/27104-bens-sherwin-williams-jobs?start=10#30436. Also he does a comparo to Autowave as well. Should get you in the right direction.

Yeah Jayson i really dont know if/how they warranty anything. These are all used cars that they either are selling, or have sold and the buyer has specified they wanted certain things repaired. Of course when we do the restorations, things are done differently. I will definately be calling the rep and seeing about a course.

And yes, im sure cutting corners helps him, but the dude is simply fast with bodywork. He pulled a bumper cover off of a Nissan 370Z today and within minutes, had a heat lamp on it, the dent straightned out, had it filled, and sanded. Usually he does the bodywork so fast I dont even see him doing it. Bad thing is, im not that fast, so he is up my ass all the time about going faster. Then I end up making stupid little mistakes.

The problem is they have been basing over e-coating, and not having any comebacks, so it will be difficult to tell them you do need it. Im just going to do it….like it or not.

And I have to tell the old timer to put his worn out mask on all the time when he goes in to spray, there is no way he will want something combersome like fresh air to drag around. If the boss wont buy one for me, I will do it myself. I have a family and dont really want to die.

Yeah I did some truck flares a few days ago and they had so much static they were pulling all my arm hairs toward them when I wiped em down. I tried wiping them with a damp cloth and it helped a little, but there was still plenty of static there.

Haha!! For real? So can you use it for an anti static wipe?

I worked with a guy that used a Teckna and a guy that used an LPH440. Both seemed to work fine for them.

Yeah I was pretty surprised the first time I sprayed it to find it was satin. Thought I did something wrong!

I am going to be doing another one tomorrow if the parts come in. Chevy truck in metallic black. Needs a bumper cover, headlight, and the fender contoured to the headlight. I think I will be using a very small amount of filler, and priming just the very front of the fender, spraying the blender down first, and getting after it. I need to get with PPG because our system doesnt recognize the code. I called the dealership, and they gave me a different code. It ended up being the same number but had a WA as a prefix.

I dont think they usually spray anything on new parts here, they scuff and shoot. I think I am going to start spraying a sealer first.

I hit the boss up this weekend about picking me up a fresh air breathing system too. Not going to be an easy task to get these guys into more modern practices since they hired this old school guy.

Dont bother banning me. I will leave on my own

Ok, thats a good point, I dont know how to spray water. There is a bodyshop right next to ours and they spray water. I will have one of those guys do it. That way the test isnt biased.
