Although it may melt and resolidify, the “weld” isn’t always strong.
Plastics fall under two categories (thermoset & thermoplastic) but
there are tons of variations of each and they don’t all behave the same. Here’s a great book. It’s very thorough and well written.

Endless customization. The Miata is one of the best handling roadsters for
the money. And turning it into a coupe is probably the most functional mod
one can do. This looks stock and clean, kinda like a baby Rx7. Tastefully done.
Most guys seem to go for wild (tacky) customs, when subtle – and just as time
consuming – customization looks better.I use a dremel with various bits to sand down and clean. Then generous amounts
of JB weld and maybe some tape so it doesn’t ooze out too much. Let sit overnight
and it’s usually good. Slow but strong. And often better than plastic welding. Not the best pic, but you can see the repaired headlamp tab with JB weld (drivers side).
Actually, this took two days to do as i used JB underneath the tab first.
Flipped it over the next day, and applied more on top. My sisters CRV that
was in for several weeks…
Being a small timer, i’ve been mix matching all sort of brands for the past 7 years.
And only one minor warranty job; had strip and repaint a Honda deck lid because i used
Bulldog over a new e-coat panel as a sealer. Can’t always follow manufacturer recommendations.I have a few Paintucation videos from way back when. It’s great for newbies. But this
forum and a few others are all you really need. Here are two other forums that most of us
are on.http://spi.forumup.org/index.php?mforum=spi
and
It’s been a roller coaster ride for sure… Gotta do something different next year
to get it a bit steady. I never bothered to advertise nor promote myself; been too
busy sniffing paint. But i should try.Is it possible to get more business and have weekends off??
Jim, the custom/resto is pretty much another world. How is this market over all?
Not just for you but the entire scene? How is the competition doing? Thanks Andy,
Detailers – enthusiasts – are up to trying something new.
It’s a good thing, really. It keeps the flow of knowledge
and technique flowing. And, it’s how we all advance.Someday, i’ll be old and gray and will be very settled in my
ways. I’ll be like some of the old timers that use lacquer
and etch primer… But, until then, i’ll keep advancing.- AuthorPosts
