I think you guys need to check into what exactly your supplier is charging you.IMO I think he is charging you full retail if not more($800 is ridiculous for one gallon of dbc),if you guys are painting quite a few jobs you should look into a wholesale account at your local paint supplier. This will save you big$$ in the long run….good luck :cheers

I know where you are coming from I am a sata guy for many years.I had a sata nr 3000(hvlp 1.4 hc) that we got when we changed to waterborne and I used that gun for 2 years then after hearing good reviews about the tekna I got one to try.Fast forward 2 plus years I’m still using it for waterborne base, works pretty damn good with autowave. The only hvlp I do like is the nr 95 and nr 2000(still have one) the 2000 does a better job with colors that have a large amount of 888df (fine metallic) but for 90% of the colors it works very well.I still use an rp and a 4000rp for clear.HTH :cheers

Many guys are using a tekna with a 7e7 cap for waterborne these days with sikkens ppg dupont basf SW etc.
I use a Sata rp for base and i am quite happy with it but i will be trying a Supernova HVLP in a couple of weeks and that gun seems to be the shit on difficult metalics , i`ve been told that even i can´t go wrong with that one :exci
I like the rp for solvent base too :cheers
my motto is any gun can spray basecoat.
How about shooting base with a 2.0 prime gun then? :rofl Its not so much about speed when using a compliant gun its more about atomization, some bases are thicker than others and a compliant gun will do a better job with some metallics, pearls are heavier and they usually know where to go.I tried a plus for a year and it just didn’t hold up to 3-6 jobs a day, as have a few other guys here and the consensus is its pretty much a turd.I will take a sata rp or a tekna anyday over the plus 😉

IMO the only hvlp gun that I like is a sata nr2000 it sprays very well and actually sprays very fine metallics better than my tekna.I think it really comes down to what people want and get used to.Whatever gun you go with just use the manufacturers suggested pressure setting and forget it,no need for the test cap.I don’t find any material savings vs a compliant gun they use about the same amount of material.

As far as bumpers go I usually go 2 medium wet coats, but for everything else I’m like Andy a close fast medium closed coat(no dryspots and a nice thin wet coat) then hammer on a second coat 😛

I don’t own a 3000 anymore,I got rid of it but if memory serves me I would get 3 1/4 turns or so.The best way to set it is to open the knob all the way,now squeeze the trigger and turn the know IN,when you feel the trigger barely start to move STOP as it is now set.Sata reccomends all controls wide open and if this is too much you need a smaller tip.Try 33-34 psi wide open and let me know….

Glad I could help, with rp’s close and fast is the only way :cheers

Not sure man,I used to use a devilbiss gti hvlp (north american version) and it was a pretty decent gun.I ran it wide open fan/material with 25-28 psi for base.I would use 75% overlap with slow reducer and a pretty good pace at about 6-8 inches or so,for the last coat dropping it a couple psi and increasing your distance another couple of inches and using a 50% overlap will help.Hey if the gun works after it is cleaned up who cares if its 10 years old,I use my 12 year old rp all the time :stoned

Just to clarify you should be using MORE overlap not less 75% is a good place to start instead of 50% :cheers

Good advice so far and always mix according to tds,I would also check the tds for the clear you are spraying for reccomended fluid tip size.I disagree on 8 inches for the 3000 rp,the sweet spot is around 4 inches and close and fast 75% overlap with 30-33 psi, with wide open controls.Just doing this will help with the texture, the further away you hold the rp the slower you will go and you will get more material on the panel. If you go close and fast you will get thiner wetter coats with less texture. If you are in a downdraft booth a slower mix always works better for more than 2 panels and it will dry faster too.A slower mixture will go on thinner and wetter without the material build up vs a fast mix that you have to hose on to keep wet.I have been an rp guy for 13 years and have found close and fast works best with this gun no matter what clear you use.HTH and good luck :cheers
