November 8, 2009 at 8:34 am #16862Oh yeah baby that is a sweet ride…..57 210 post???Nice color combo, less is more.Your friend would be an asset to this site. Thanks for sharing Bondo.
November 8, 2009 at 8:31 am #16861I can see some panel re-palcement happening on that one, definately some cave it and pave it happening on that quarter.Doesn’t look like a bad car though.I have a soft spot for 72 chevelle’s cause I own one…….jeez I need to finish it  Aftermarket full 1/4’s fit real nice on those cars, I have done a few sets.Maybe you could talk him into one??Keep us posted on progress.
November 7, 2009 at 5:06 am #16820I spray a complete differently mainly cause I forget where my overlap is supposed to be :wak What I do is start at the edge of the roof and go towards the center, then pick up in the center of the roof and spray towards the edge. Then I start at the bottom of the rocker on the pass. side and walk the side of the car and spray the fender, door and 1/4.then I spray the hood and trunk, cruise on over to the opposite side and spray the fender, door 1/4 at the same time(walking the side) starting at the top and working down. For me it is easier to spray this way and it minimizes the dry edge.I was never a fan of panel painting and staggering your overlap….to confusing for me :S
October 25, 2009 at 9:17 pm #16585Thanks Ryan, the car came to the shop in metal crate with the doors and trunk lid installed. We put it on a rotisserie(sp?)and seam sealed and painted the bottom and firewall and the dash in summer of 08.The owner then took the car home and installed the suspension and powertrain and brought it back in Feb 09.We finished our part in mid June09,the owner did final assembly.
PNLBTR this car was a lot of work, every gap needed attention, some had to be cut, some had to be welded and ground to the right width.Personally I would rather have done a rusty one, that way I could have done a better job of aligning the quarters trunk etc.It was a real challenge to make all the repro parts fit with each other.
October 25, 2009 at 7:33 am #16577Thanks,it was for a customer,I could not afford it :wak It was sprayed with sikkens autowave and HS+ clear,it looks better in person, the pics aren’t that good.
October 19, 2009 at 1:16 am #16478From reading your post you are a picky painter that cares.Maybe I could add a couple of things.Check the towels you are using, sometimes they can leave lint. Also check your tack rag, sometimes the cheap ones can leave fibres that look like dirt.
When you blow try using a tack rag at the same time,I used to just use my hand but this helped. When doing a complete I will go around the whole vehicle starting at the roof, then hood, trunk sides at least 4 times.I try to use a new tack rag for my last tack.If possible try to do most of your masking in the booth, out in the shop can be dusty. The old guy that I learned alot from always said”you can never blow enough”.The anti-static is a good idea,so is a waterborne cleaner, another option is isopropyl alcohol and distilled water mixed one to one.Just a couple of thoughts that might work for you or not :unsure:October 18, 2009 at 1:10 am #16472So tell us what your standard operating procedure is once the car is washed, masked, and in the booth. When do you wipe it down? Before or after you blow it off,how many times do you go over the car with a blower etc.I know this is obvious stuff but maybe it is something simple or a sequence that needs to be changed.I have been painting for 23 years :wak so maybe I could help.Welcome to this site, there are a bunch of talented and friendly people on this board.
October 13, 2009 at 12:43 am #16424The hutchins hustler inline absolutely sucks azz! They are top heavy, uncomfortable, shorter stroke than the viking, and slower. The one in my toolbox collects dust.Back when I used to do lots of bodywork I would use a viking or national detroit 8″ mudhog to rough filler in to shape on flat panels.I use a viking inline,I think they outperform the hutchins hands down.Just my 2 cents though 😛
September 26, 2009 at 7:04 am #16138That thing sounds like it can really haul the banana’s 😉 I was waiting to see if Rosco P.Coltrane or Buford T. Justice was gonna try to shag you down. Thanks for posting gives me incentive to finish my old wreck 😛
