I’m not really big on bashing paint brands,I have always thought a good painter can spray anything. With that being said I have sprayed ppg,a little bit of dupont,glasurit,diamont,ici,sikkens,u-tech,lesonal,and now autowave. They all have good and bad.As far as coeverage goes sikkens autobase plus covers fast, diamont, and glaso don’t cover as fast, same with ppg. There is a reason dupont came up with there value shade sealer, they know that chromabase is like painting with kool-aid.Having been a collision painter with close to 25 years experience,I have always been able to get a very good match with sikkens, even the odd butt match. The new variant decks are sprayed and similar to basf, easy to find the right variant.I think you just have to get used to what you are using, good and bad with every brand.

August 14, 2009 at 9:43 am #15356Why are you fed up with it?I don’t mind it,I could think of worse things to spray.
August 12, 2009 at 10:30 am #15307Bondo gave you excellent advice, you really need to do this with side jobs(ask me how I know)It looks like you can’t turn back now,but if he gives you any hassle tell him that you will help load up his parts and you don’t need the practice anymore. It is so typical of some people that want a showcar job for a maaco price :wak

July 25, 2009 at 10:21 pm #14995My wife is a little different than the average one,she looks at my work to see if she can find a flaw.I do the odd chevelle ,camaro or muscle car after hours in my home shop. Then I take it to work and spray it in the booth, when it comes home for assembly she is the first one out there to look 😛 True story,a friend of mine brings his 66 beaumont(chevelle) by the house after he got some guy to do a quickie black bc/cc paint job on for me to look at.She walks out and takes a look and asks him”who painted that orange peel pete” :woohoo: One other time she jumped in my big block four speed chevelle and took it to the gas station to get cigarettes(when she smoked)The young guys at the station asked her if it could spin the tires? So on the way out she does a John force style burn out for 50 feet or so.SO not all women are the same,I really need to get that car finished and on the road again.
June 5, 2009 at 2:30 am #14637Your area is different than mine regarding price. In my area dupont is the most expensive, then glasurit/rm,sikkens is cheaper for us,we also use $20,000-$30,000 a month in paint. Our supplier gives us a 30% discount on sikkens so it works out well for us.After using it for 2 months our bills are no different than using autobase plus.We bought a gallon of rm diamont for a motorhome (thats what the factory used)and it was $575,autobase plus for the same color was less than $400 and coverage is much better.
June 3, 2009 at 5:40 am #14606Your kidding yourself if you think BASF is cheaper, dupont is pricey with 4 increases per year. You could use whatever primer you want with autowave.Did you have someone check out your booth,if it works with rm it will work with autowave. You have a few choices besides superior for clear.Color match is very good.
June 3, 2009 at 5:08 am #14602Why the change of heart Joe,a couple of months ago you said the sikkens system was crap??Anyway we have been using autowave for 2 months with no problems,I got alot out the course at the sikkens training center in vancouver.PPG is very similar to sikkens but have heard color match is not great.I have no complaints, great color match and real nice gloss.
May 18, 2009 at 9:03 pm #14366That is a fun day,I used to go years ago.I went in 94,97,98,99,I guess I’m about due to go again.Hey stone how many cars go now, over a 1000??Have you ever made it down to Lethbridge for street machine weekend??That is a good time as well.
April 29, 2009 at 4:29 am #14127Hello Brad,I am in Lethbridge(which is on your way to Calgary)I work at the biggest shop south of Calgary,Roughly 20,000 sq.ft with 18 employees. If you want to stop in for a quick tour on your way back or some other time let me know. The shop is 10 mins out of town on highway 3 in a little town called Coaldale. If you are interested you can pm me .It would be interesting to meet someone from the board.
April 26, 2009 at 8:19 pm #14097:rofl I totally get what you are saying Jimmo,I have worked with many retards over the years.I have never claimed to be the best, but I try to do the best job that I can and I expect the others around me to do the same.At our shop the bodymen do all their own priming and prepping, the painters just mask the job, prepare our blend panel and spray them.I am a combo guy,if we are busy I will spray full time, but for the most part my time is evenly split between collision and painting.I do my own jobs start to finish, paint the ones where the customer is really picky, and fix the other painters mistakes.I have found that if the bodyman has to prep his own work they can’t just pass it off,if it looks like crap it’s there own fault. We have one guy who is a hack but he gets all the jobs that the customer wants fixed asap and don’t care what they look like.We always joke that he never fixes them,he just changes the appearence.
April 26, 2009 at 8:46 am #14081I think Alberta has one of the best apprenticeship training programs in the country.I have been in the industry going on 25 years and have seen many changes.A shortage of good techs is becoming the norm around here as well. Its funny now that I think about it when I started I worked with numerous talented “old guys”who knew there stuff inside and out and they were happy to share their knowledge and make sure we did it the right way..Now I am one of the old guys, just funny how time goes by even when you are not having fun.Jimmo it’s not like that every where, there are still some talented people in my area and the shop that I work at.I’m not sure what my point is,I think I might have had a few to many tonight.
