Local SF estimatics super told me just last week that three local select service shops were set to close down. I didn’t ask which ones. Suppliers confirm most shops are dead or near dead. Some have trimmed days for staff.

I’m slower than usual for this time of year for me, but it is always a little down between the holidays and tax time. Gives me time to devote to restorations that I have waiting.

Had two Harleys in one day get dropped off for paint and flames. So there’s always something to do.

I’m buiding a basket case 74 for a customer right now.
I’ve been having good luck with Corvette Central. (CorvetteCentral.com)
You name it, they seem to have it.

I’ve used them in the past on a 67 I did for a customer.

    Good one,

    But there’s some lines I won’t cross.

It was something like a mirror or door handle job.

She was waiting for the car in the office , asked to use the bathroom.

After about a half hour I finished up the repair, she paid and left.

About an hour later my coffee kicked in and I had to use the bathroom. Low and behold Granny panties set in the corner of the bathroom. WTF!!!!

And no tip on top of it?

    This Isn’t worth $50.

Good thing for paint sticks. They make nice sterile forceps.

I’ve got another story that worse about my co-tenant though.

The only woman who ever gave me a hug after fixing her car was “Yolanda”. A rather large african american woman. Nice, but not exactly a “tip”

Regardless, nice job on the pilot.

Another thing you”l see is when you start to get more and more coats of candy on, you’ll see less drastic change between each additional coat.

I think so, just a fancy word for spray out card isn’t it?[/quote]

Same premise, but a with a letdown card you spray your base color out (I usually let it dry, then mask off some bare base) then one coat of candy over the whole card, let it dry, mask it off (usually about an inch), spray a second coat over the whole card, let it dry, and mask that one off, spray a third…… I usually do 6-7 “steps”,unmask all the candy then clear.

Gives you a good idea as to how many candy coats will get you there.

I’ve found that the base match is more critical in obtaining an acceptable match. Candy coats are a little more forgiving so long as its the correct color. The hard part comes when trying to figure how many coats of candy it takes to shift the color to match.

Very nice work, You just tripled the vehicle value.

Sad part is, if it gets totaled next month, They’ll give him $1000 for the car.

That’s what you get for buying tools from a place called “Princess Auto”

I got a borescope from harbor freight years ago. Somewhere in the area of $200. Basically just a 1/4 inch tube with lenses on either end, and a place to screw in a mini mag light. Can’t see Sh*t with it. Learned not to buy something without trying it out first.

I’ve always used a Viking, and am happy with it, but I don’t really have anything else to compare it to.
I had always heard that the hutchins were basically a rectangular random orbital sander, not a “file”.

Lately my vikings just seems to sit in my box.

Most of the time I rough my filler work out with the mud hog, then block.

I went to a clinic for pinstriping, and you should see what happens to striping enamel when static builds up on a plastic part. The paint literally jumps off the brush onto the surface.

The instructor showed us by blowing into his thumb on the other hand from where he was striping. Had us all going real good. Until he showed that it did it regardless of what he did with his appendages.

He showed me the remedy was to spray it down with Windex, and wipe. No more static.

I don’t know why it works, but it does. Pretty much just ammonia, and water.

I’d be more inclined to go to SEMA or AAPEX, and maybe pop into NACE for a few hours. I went to both about 5 years ago and it was easy to see a stark difference.

SEMA was almost like going to a huge party. Music, girls, celebrity signings, I even bumped into Duane from Coddington’s with his “girlfriend”.

NACE was like going to a wake.

But for this year, I don’t think I’ll be attending either. Not looking for any new equipment right now.
