Any automotive palm sander will work. they do not have an orbital pattern. they are random orbital while the disc spins it also moves in an elliptical pattern. A DA (dual action)Sander has the ability to lock the head so it spins in an orbital fashion or it can be used unlocked as a random orbital.
ok
i dont want to buy a sander and get stuck with something i didnt want.
my no name orbital sander, spins random orbital and then spins rotarally lol ok in a circle as well but as soon as you apply moderate pressure this spinning stops and your stuck on random orbit. i guess what im looking for is forced rotation while random orbiting.
on a note as someone mentioned transfer rates of conventional guns being low ,this is a fallacy and they are no where nears as bad as is often claimed in fact with HS materials they can achieve higher transfer rates than HVLP ,take for instance the Devilbiss JGA Pro ,it has a transfer rate of 63% only fractionaly below a compliant gun ,HVLP lacks the velocity needed to keep heavier material in flight and as such this can dramaticaly effect its transfer rates when used with heavier materials ,but heres another concideration ,conventional guns give by far the finest finish results so you wont need to sand off all the “extra” paint you put on with those inferior HVLP guns ,its one thing putting more paint on the panel but very much another if it goese on like pudding 😉

if you want to put what i am saying to the test try comparing a conventional gun with a HVLP using high build primer and whatch the spatter all over the floor off the HVLP whilst the conventional will keep everything nice tight and even ,if the HVLP can actualy cope at all with high build that is ;-)
agreed

make sure use a squirrel cage fan, they can push though counduits better than a fan
Thank bud, looks good- is that off the gun ? Ill have to crack the supernova out again as i started getting pretty good results with my sata 3000 digital so ive stuck with that a bit now,is 20 to 23 psi for clear with the supernova ? Isnt that a bit low ? Im not a trained painter so am willing to learn as much as possible.
Do you full time painters go by a tds for the paint you use and stick to that or get tips from the supplier of the gun and adjust it to your style ? I ask because i find it difficult to find out what pressure to spray and distance to panel when using a new gun.
yep str8 off the gun, my supernova says 19psi on the cap my w400 says 20psi i spray up to 30 sometimes but mostly 22-25
im not a full time painter but i adjust my gun to the guns manufacturer max and them some. so for the w400 20psi recommended i use 25 you can use higher or lower when you get more experience but stay within the limit until u get used to it.the supernova sprays like the lph so dial it in some and move a little faster, that thing will be slow if you are using non high solids.
look at the psi rating on your air cap
Not sure if we get the same models as you but if you mean the WS400 with one of the HD fluid nozzle then yes, I’ve used one extensively.

My own gun has the original 1.3 Clear nozzle but I used a buddies 1.3 HD EVO model for about 6 months. A welcome improvement in output over my regular 1.3 I reckon.

I’ve recently gone back to my old job and the company has bought themselves the same gun (WS400 EVO 1.3HD) after seeing the results I got with one in the past, so I’m using that rather than my own.

I may eventually upgrade my own gun to the HD nozzle but I’ve got a hankering for a 4000RP. I demo’d one a while back but the 1.2 it had fitted wasn’t fast enough for me. To be fair I’ve no need to change but I just like shiny new stuff :exci And the fact that my Iwata is falling apart! They really aren’t as sturdy as the old W400 guns. I have a couple of those that still look great after many years of (ab)use, but the supernova is a wreck. The control knobs all fall off (sorted with the EVO model by screwing them in place), and all of the chrome is flaking off the air cap! A bit like the cars that Pininfarina also designed – sweet when they work but not built to last forever…

The other painters at work don’t seem to be able to get the same results out of the supernova as me. I haven’t actually seen them painting (only the aftermath) but I’ve heard one of them likes to spray from pretty far away, which doesn’t really get the job done with one of these.
cool

Nice jobs there I must say. think i’m gonna throw my satas away and order a few iwatas
Hey! Less of the Iwata bashing :p 😆

haha w400 lv4
wont post sagola pics not worth it
sata i only use for base now if i want to get is done in a hurry

August 11, 2013 at 6:10 am #44013

i use a w400 and wouldnt mind trying a ws400 hd
the ls400 is kinda slow if you dont dial it in, heres a panel i did with my w400 fan dialed in and about 22 pounds or so

August 11, 2013 at 5:56 am #44011

for what its worth, ive read where someone was spraying with the lph400 and 2″ from the panel, that sounds about right lol
the supernova is supposed to be the upgrade to the lph400 its sprays a little different with a different pattern.
the supernova ws400 hd is supposed to upgrade the w400 lv4, im posting a panel sprayed with a w400 and i assume the ws400hd would probably to the same thing only faster. this is about 5 inches from the panel fan dialed in a bit to get more fluid output and about 20-23 pounds
What is it about reduced pressure that you prefer over HVLP? I ask as I’m a novice and my gun is a reduced pressure Anest Iwata with 1.3mm tip. I was looking at a LVLP 1.3mm (cheap one admittedly) gun on ebay and wondering if it would be better for metallics and less overspray clouds.

I don’t care about speed or being able to pile it on like a colission shop, just results. So am curious if the RP gun is actually better.
which iwata gun you are refering to as rp? in my experience metalics like lots of air, you can get by with a lvlp but i prefer a hvlp, havent tried a metalic with a compliant gun like my plus gun yet though. sata can handle metallics but u will use lots of air and material.

July 29, 2013 at 6:06 pm #43837

my motto is any gun can spray basecoat. until you get to certain metalics, personly i have never had a problem unless i get too close to the panel.
id rather a hvlp for basecoat cause it doesnt need the level of atomzation of clears so you can run a lower pressure. IF you needed to base a panel or car real quick i guess your could break out a sata or plus.

thanks
ive thought about that already
and where i am there are no rules
:rock

gonna use a water mist scrubber as well
