Hey guys. Here’s today’s job, I did this job a little different due to the colour I now it looks white but its a pastel white basecoat, I masked off the door to keep the colour off till the primer patch was covered and every coat I did I coated a spray card to help me till I knew I could un mask the door and start blending

Hey mate, if it was my gun. I’d strip clean it, service it and reset up the gun, there normally used for smart repairs or minor scratches the needle size starts an 0.6 the one I have has a 0.8 on it. In which I do smart spot repairs or wheels etc something that is bit tricky to do with a normal sized gun.

With it having a 1.3 on it is think the old owner would use it for doin bumpers, mirror covers and wheels, I’d say he used it for clear coat as 1.3 would give a nice finish, the idea of it being a jet is to keep the repair small. So is say if you used it for base coat the paint would go on to wet or a to bigger fan, that’s why I’ve got a 0.8 for base.

I’d say you could use it for hs solids but ull ha e to play with the gun and set up to get the finish you want.
Depending on the use you want to use it for will depend on the psi. Ie sport repaid or whole bumper paint 🙂

If your a mechanic over here in guernsey you can pay up to £90 an hour, the cost living over here is so high, if you type in google state agents in guernsey Channel Islands ull see how pricey the houses are lol, I’ve been using high solid the last coue of weeks and think its great but still have a little trouble with it due to the fact I’m using three different clears ,

Hey mate how did you get in the trade, every one has there story ha ha what’s yours, every one feel free to ad to this :rock
I take nibs down with 1500 wet on a block then buzz over with 2000 if needed.

For polishing I use 3m fast cut and 3m finesse it with the appropriate polishing foams.

Your work must be super glossy if you 3000 your paint!

Does your boss take a percentage or just a set amount per job?
I try my best, I use 3m and ferecala mostly, and then depending on the age or state of the car depends on what polish and wax I use.
My boss takes money for the booth rate and paints, so over the yrs I’ve got my own fillers, primers and clears to help keep the cost down but I use his basecoat so he does make something on the spare jobs, our hourly rate in guernsey is £48 and I charge £25, I did a spare couple of weeks ago which came to £729 but by the time my boss took his cut I had £390 which was a pain by every little helps 😉

Yeh I not wot you mean the fleet I do is postal vans ha ha which is great fun to do, until you now the colour do well that you now all the tints going in the mix with out looking them up

Awesome, I love fleet work, at my work I can fill the booth with replacement panels with can fix a couple if vans at a time they pay great for use, are work is by 80% insurance work, with being second panel I get most of the crap that people don’t wanna do but it keeps me busy ha ha, the only thing I noticed with air dry was the die back on the high solids, do you over reduce to get a better finish or do you flat back a lot 🙂

    March 5, 2013 at 3:18 am #41807

Sounds great, how do you do your nibs and what cut compound etc do you use, if I’ve only got a couple of nibs to do I use 3000 wet , but if I’m doing a whole panel then 2000, the nibs and peal ares then use 3000 the fade out the flattish ares ( so you don’t get the peel with flat spots ever where) which I’ve seen from some other shops do lol, my boss takes a cut from my spare but if I’ve got the work I can make my wk wage in a weekend lol happy days

Hey looks great, what was it like for coverage, do you tint your primer or wet on wet to help, is that your booth in the pics, Do you let them air dry or bake them in a booth set up, I have noticed that alot of people use homemade or garages that which the spray in, which that in mind do many of you guys do insurance work with this set up etc

    March 5, 2013 at 2:56 am #41803

Hey mate, looks awesome great work, I’d be well pleased with that, do you need to do much nibs and polish 😉 with your home made booth is it yours or do you work for someone. Do you get much time to do spare or you not really aloud

I was about confused when they first ask my to do it lol I don’t normally paint things like this but I’m not going to turn it down because it hasn’t got wheels ha ha

    March 2, 2013 at 4:33 am #41746

I’ve found it the easiest way to do them, with the back wire on the hook I can lift it off and spin or lift, drop it down for the harder parts, the devilbiss Sri works great to clear the frame 🙂
About how much will having someone fix it best they can cost?
It will depend on the hourly rate and what paint line the body shop are using, I wouldn’t have a clue on that as I’m in England with the pound and I take it your on the dollar,
Do you have any mates in the trades or in the college classes that you can do over a weekend. Or even a body shop that can do it spare time with you helping 🙂
