Color match is ok. Not the best I have seen. Most colors hit pretty good, but there are quite a few that are off. I think as time goes by it will get better. I always submit the poor matches to them and have seen some alternates in new updates for some of the colors. It is still fairly new compared to solvent.
All will cover in 1.5 coats as long as you use the right valueshade. Most of the time I will spray 2 medium wet coats and an orientation coat or 1 wet, 1 medium, and an orientation coat. Always wet on wet. You can do 1.5 coats but your first coat goes on pretty wet. It seems that I get a little better finish with the method I use.
Blends are cake. DON’T FLICK YOUR WRIST! You will have a grainy mess. On your orientation coat just make nice medium-slow even strokes at about 60-70% overlap and when you get into your blend area pull back. Dont pull back fast, just pull back and let it blend in. Always use the blender, it will keep it from getting grainy, even on solid colors.
Make sure you get enough on to cover the first time. If you let it dry and spray more base on it will dieback. If in doubt make that extra medium pass before your orientation coat.
On two-tones make sure to use 2075 and let it sit for 1/2 hour. Don’t wait 10 minutes thinking it has been 1/2 hour or you will pull base off.
I haven’t had very good luck spraying it with Iwatas. Seems like it would get really wet but after it dried you could see through it with a sun gun. Never had that problem with a Devilbiss CVI, Tekna or a Sata RP.
There are some other things such as what humidity to spray at but it depends on where your located, and there are a few more things if your interested. Keep us posted on how it goes.

You using a CVI on that?
September 6, 2009 at 6:02 pm #15726That is amazing! Love the thread. It’s interesting to see how something like that comes together.

The best way to learn to paint is to learn how to fix your mistakes! Everybody has those jobs you just want to go away! Best way is to deliver them in the rain.
August 22, 2009 at 4:28 am #15495I would probably stick with what you have!
One trick I used for blending it, I would do my blend with my first coat right after spraying my blending additive. I would then work my way back in. Seemed to work pretty well for me. It’s always a little harder to blend a basecoat that covers super quick.

I take it you are from the UK with that Devilbiss GTI Pro?
Glad to have you here!
August 15, 2009 at 8:23 pm #15370I used Sikkens for years. About 1.5 years ago our shop switched to Chromapremier. (supposed to be Spies but major jobber screw up) Between the two I would stick with Sikkens. Sikkens covers better and looks a little better. When we used it their variant system sucked. I have heard they have a new one which is pretty good. We ended up going with Cromax Pro because of coverage.
I think if you are spraying solvent there are better choices than Dupont or Sikkens. I would go with Spies or Standox (same thing) or BASF. I have not found anybody that has much negative to say about these brands.
And just for the record I like both Sikkens and Dupont so this is an unbiased opinion.

What products are you using to paint your dash trim pieces? Seems to match pretty good.
August 15, 2009 at 5:00 pm #15364Nice work Han! Love the car also.
What is the reason that you buff at a low rpm like you do? Have you found it to help with swirls? Do you use more pressure or move slower with lower rpm’s?
August 8, 2009 at 10:40 pm #15266I thought the same thing Ding!
The rest of the video is disturbing. Not really surprising though, look who is in charge! 🙁
