great color matches if you can find the right variant in the decks. The SG-0 sealers are great and they lay down very flat. Base has great coverage and never require any more than 2 coats when use the correct sealer. Blends very easily , Control coats are a breeze. The ms clear in nexa aquabase system is nothing to right home to mom about but i love the HS. Once you get used to the system you wont have any complaints. IMO.

First of all you need to make up your mind what you doing. If you are only painting one job you can probably get away with using a cheap gun,but if this is something that you are interested in than $400 is a small investment. What would be the point of buying a cheapo gun then only to realize that you should have spent the extra cash and got a decent gun the first time around.

As for the type of paint selection, I dont know what type of paint your jobber sells, the only way to find out is call and ask. I doubt its gonna be waterborne because as far as i know they are not allowed to sell the stuff to the general public.I dont know exactly what you are painting but My suggestion is buy the VOC compliant solvent base/clear or urathane enamel(thats a single stage paint). And if you want to paint something that you want to match, take it to and professional bodyshop.

If you live in Quebec or any where else in Canada, the law is passed on lower voc compliance. which means that all the major body shops are using waterborne paint due to the fact that its the only paint out there now that will match decent. You can get the lower voc solvent still but more than likely shops aren’t using it because it doesnt match, its still probably being used by back yarders or shops doing completes.

If you are looking to buy a good gun to get started i would suggest buying a devilbiss tekna. It is the best all around gun i own and you will not be disappointed.

Don’t even get me started on the “Tack and a Whack” 1- 1/2 wow clear coat application. :rofl
I liked how when PPG came out with the 700/750 clear they boasted the 1 visit idea with the same method.

Then months later sent out a bulletin saying they needed everyone to wet mil their clear to ensure enough build as they were getting lots of complaints of delam issues. And suggested spraying more traditionally (2 medium wet coats with 3-5 min flash between coats). :rofl
PPG are up to their old tricks again it seems, their nexa p190-6759 is quoted as being a one visit clear(tack an whack). Its also quoted a being a hs clear even tho it’s only 42% solid :wak

apply your filler straight, sand it straight and there will be no need to guide coat.

I think that color calls for a #5
just prime it!

then sand the rest of the week until you got a nice day for painting. if you paint it inside the garage and you’re scared of not covering everything just go around the car with a flash light and check for coverage. sand the base coat with 1500 dry if you have any imperfections then another coat of base and you’ll be set for clear 🙂

don’t rush it! 3,000$ worth of materials, better be safe than sorry.
$3000 worth in materials?
I disagree,if you apply 2-3 coats let it sit for a day or 2 you will get rid of solvents and possible shrinkage. When you sand it flat that cuts out texture and gives you a smoother substrate for flow coating,so yes its different.I understand all about custom painting an how much material you can have, but you will cut down on problems with 2 clear coat applications.A video of someone endorsing his own custom painting techniques and product means nothing, lets see what the car looks like in person and after a couple of years.I have seen many a “showcar paintjob”that looks like butt due to too much material, sand scratch swelling, swirls etc.
1.4 tip and cold temp = runs. Try turning up the heat in the booth and going with a 1.2 or 1.3 tip and i dont think you will have an issue any more.

I thought it was 80% overlap for clear…… Just sayin 😛

    October 9, 2011 at 4:21 pm #33457

2 mils is the suggested amount of clear. For most professional painters that would be 2 coats. The most that i would apply is 3, any more than that you are asking for trouble. Too much film build is highly not recommended buy any paint manufacturer because of the chance of die back, chipping, peeling etc. :deadhorse
