Got the front end done and put together. I’m going to try to re-clear my headlights to get rid of the yellow. If that doesn’t work I will buy some new ones.

Started with 800 this time and worked my way up. I still can’t get over how good this clear buffs. I need to play around with it some more and figure out the perfect spray pattern and technique.

Just a comparison between buffed and un-buffed.

It looks pretty good. It does have a little urethane wave though. Debating on starting out with 800 instead of 1000.

I was lazy today. All I got around to was color sanding and buffing one fender. I used some 1000 by hand and 1500/3000 on DA. For compound I used some 3m (can’t remember the number) with a Meguiars Wool pad followed by a maroon pad and then some 3m 05937 on my porter cable.

I really need to find a better booth to use. The water separator was full of water along with the air line. I took a new line and my air filters so it wasn’t really a big deal but still I wish they would take more car of things there. On top of that the booth was really dirty. I ended up sweeping it all out and then went over it with my shop vac.

This is what I swept up:

Everything turned out pretty good. I’m going to re-shoot the red on the hood though. It has some mottling. I’ve never painted anything and had an issue with mottling until using this Tekna Pro-Lite. I started with the 1.3 and the TE10 and it was really bad. I applied it medium at 23 psi. I switched over to the TE20 cap and went up to 32 psi I believe it was and it got better but still wasn’t perfect. I shot 2 medium coats and a drop coat. All in all I’m pleased with the way it turned out though. Doing a big project like this I always expect something to go wrong. I will be sanding tomorrow, shooting the hood again and flow coating the rest of the truck. I already know I’m going to have to color sand and buff the whole truck though. The booth just isn’t clean enough and the doors don’t seal well so it’s going to have trash in it.

Got the HD hood on. I think it’s going to look nice when it’s all finished up. Love the shape of it.

Got the top primed this afternoon. Noticed I missed a dent on the front of the cab close to the windshield on the curved part. Took a body hammer and tapped around the high areas and it popped out. I’m glad that worked cause I really didn’t want to put any filler up there. Got my hinges and battery box painted as well.

Blasted my hinges. I will prime and paint them tomorrow. On another note while I was out working a Rubber-Seal supplier stopped by. Gave me some prices on some of their stuff. He gave me a can of some primer they sell and said when/if I order anything remind him of who I am and he will send some free stuff to try out. Seemed to be a pretty nice guy. Any of you guys ever used Rubber-Seal products? I remember back home where I’m from a guy mentioned using their clear. Funny cause when I mentioned his name the guy knew who I was talking about.

Got the top stripped and dents repaired.

Polypropylene is pretty much what they make atv and dirt bike plastics with. I thought most bumpers were tpo. I’ve seen some local guys torch atv plastic to bring the mold release to the top. The ones they’ve done paint sticks to and the plastics are pressure washed on a regular basis. I think there are some videos on youtube of people doing atv’s. I will see if I can find ouf their exact process.

    September 18, 2013 at 5:20 am #44516

Everything I’ve read about polypropylene is that you are going to have to heat it and get the mold release to raise to the top and get it off. Might want to try baking it like Ben said or if you have some infrared lights they might work. I’ve even seen people lightly go over it with a torch.

Thanks I appreciate it. I’m ready to get it all done but I’m trying to take my time. I want it to be as perfect as possible. I know it’s just a 2000 model truck but I still want it to be just about as good as it can. I’m going to have to touch up the door pins when I get the doors in place. There isn’t much tolerance for paint so I had to sand it down so the doors would go all the way down. Not a big deal though. The hood was damaged on one side and I repaired the top and saw there were some dents on the bottom side too so I decided to fix those while I was at it.

    Fender and jambs matching up:

Under hood damage and fix. Ended up using some pry bars, pliers and body hammers. It was dented pretty much all the way down the side. I really need to order a stud gun…

I used the House of Kolor KD3000 DTS primer surfacer as a sealer on the jambs. I must say that stuff is pretty amazing. I mixed it 4:1:2 and it sprayed extremely smooth. Nice thing about it is that there is no induction period, can be applied directly to metal and sands really easy. I let it flash for 30 minutes and then painted. Even mixed as a medium build surfacer it sprays really nice. When I got through I thought for sure my Devilbiss FLG3 turned into a Sagola 3300…

Got the inner fenders sprayed finally. Late in the day so the pics aren’t the greatest.

Been dealing with these little guys for about a week. This what just from today. For some reason they love white so I put some dawn and water in a bucket. Needless to say they didn’t make it!

    Fenders:

Need opinions on 2 paint schemes. First or second? Not sure why the picture is rotated like that because it doesn’t show up in my photobucket wrong. I’ve turned and uploaded it again but it stays the same.
