I’ve seen scratches come back but it was because the oils in the compounds and polishes were basically filling the scratch. I try to use a 50% isopropyl alcohol 50% water mix and wipe the panel down after each section. It should remove the oils. I use some powerful halogen lights as well so I can see what’s going on.
These are all straight out of the gun Sata 3000 rp 1.3

Yeah the tri coat is for sure out of the question now. I really don’t want to spend $1000 just on paint without clear. I’ve really been wanting to to try out some Spies Hecker or R-M and Glasurit so I will probably look into that. I can get the Glasurit 923-255 and Spies 8035 locally. Cheapest and easiest route would be to paint it back black but the upkeep is too much. Back to the drawing boards!
Probably the reason that when I sent an email asking if what he was selling on ebay was actually deltron and not omni he never replied. I bet PPG would not be happy to find out that one of their suppliers is listing and selling a false product on Ebay. Not to mention Ebay probably wouldn’t like it.
I’ve gone from 1500 to 3000 and seems to work fine. The finer you can get the surface sanded the easier and better looking the buffing will turn out. Seems like you are doing things right to me. Is it scratches you are seeing after wiping or the oils in the polish leaving streaks? Mix up some isopropyl alcohol and water and wipe down an area and see what that does. Other than that you may just have to deal with it until it hardens up a bit more. Understand though that your friends is likely to scratch it up the first time he washes it anyway.
I’m working on finishing up my first black paint job and I’m having a problem getting it to finish out as nice as I would like.
I’m getting very faint, very fine lines in the clear. It looks to me like the microfiber towels I am using are leaving ultra fine scratches in the clear. I’ve never noticed this problem before, but I’ve never done a black car that had to be super nice either.
The final step before wax or glaze to my finishing process is polishing with 3M ultrafina and a foam pad. Once I wipe the Ultrafina residue off the car, in the right light I’m seeing very faint lines that run in the same direction I’ve wiped.
Any tips on how to get the best finish possible on the car would be appreciated.
What kind of microfibers are you using? You can buy some really nice ones from Advance Auto Parts. The brand name is Griot’s and are extremely soft. I went through what you are talking about with my truck when I first painted it. Black is a tough color to get perfect and keep that way. I eventually found out that the 3m pads are crap. I switched over to a porter cable 7424 random orbital polisher with Lake Country pads and a Menzerna polish and it fixed all my problems. I hear the new 3D Polishes are pretty awesome too. What kind of clear did you put on it? Some clears are softer than others obviously and scratch easy. You should go check out http://www.autopia.org Those guys over there really know their stuff when it comes to a perfect finish. If I were you I would skip the glaze and buy some Optimum Polymer Technologies Spray Wax. It is fresh paint safe, does an amazing job and can be sprayed anywhere on the vehicle without worrying about staining.

Omni Plus, Shopline and ValuePro
Trying to narrow things down. What’s the difference between Omni and Omni Plus? They guy says he can mix Omni but not Omni Plus, Shopline or ValeuPro. Is that basecoat available in regular Omni?
So your buying it online and going to get 2 gallons of unreduced dbc for $385?Like others have said I doubt you are getting dbc, more like omni mbc in a deltron can.If something is too good to be true it more than likely is,IMO I would stay away from online sales when it comes to buying paint, you really don’t know what you are going to get and good luck getting the online guy to stand behind what he sells you.
Clear coats are not all the same, generally the higher priced ones have better DOI,sprayability and will last without dieback pinching up etc.A cheap clear will look just like an expensive clear when sprayed but time is the enemy they just don’t stand up.I think 894 is nicer to spray and looks nicer than 2021,but either one will work for you.
If anyone mixes PPG on here can you please look and see if WA800J can be mixed in the Omni line? I know a lot of the tri stages can’t be mixed in the Nason line is why I’m asking.
I hadn’t ever considered that the Deltron I was buying could be counterfeit product. I’ve been getting most of it from ebay seller wbmesq, but I usually call them directly now as opposed to dinking with E-bay. It’s an auto parts store in Watertown / Canton, New York.

What is the number and name of the place?

Yep that’s the same guy I talked to about it.
Whoops must have missed that :headsmack: $400 a gallon is pretty decent, you will have 4 gallons sprayable by the time your done, that is more than enough. If it was me after it is prepped and ready to go I would use a white sealer, this will cut down on ANY coverage issues, you will only need 2 coats of white as long as your technique is good then go right to your midcoat,2 coats and a drop coat and you will be fine.
I will be getting 2 gallons unreduced for $385 by buying it online which is a great deal IMO. I’m actually stripping the truck down to bare metal, shooting epoxy, 2k and blocking a few times. I was for sure going to use a sealer before my color coats go on as well.
My next dilemma will be what to use for my clearcoat. I know 894 was mentioned. The local body shop here in town that uses PPG Global said check on the 2021. It will end up being a bit cheaper but I want something that is going to last and not be like trying to buff a rock later on down the road.
My next question is a clearcoat just a clearcoat? Obviously there are some companies out there that say their clear can be used over anyone’s basecoats and other say just use it with their lines of paint. Is this the case for all manufacturers? That is if you are using solvent basecoat. I know I’ve used Dupont over House of Kolor paint without any ill effects.
I think you guys need to check into what exactly your supplier is charging you.IMO I think he is charging you full retail if not more($800 is ridiculous for one gallon of dbc),if you guys are painting quite a few jobs you should look into a wholesale account at your local paint supplier. This will save you big$$ in the long run….good luck :cheers
The prices I listed were for a gallon of base and a gallon of midcoat unreduced which will give me 2 gallons of each once reduced. Is that not enough? Ive never sprayed ppg myself. Always used dupont or nason. I know I used almost 2 gallons of 99k black when I sprayed it last and that was 3 coats.
Looks like my truck might get the pearl white that I wanted after all. The guy online quoted me $385 for a gallon of the base and a gallon of the pearl. If I use a while sealer should I be able to spray my entire truck with that? It’s a 2000 Silverado extended cab complete color change other than inside of bed and firewall. Local supplier quoted me $860 for the same and it would have to be the DBC because I doubt they mix that in the OMNI line.
