Thanks for the reply guys. :cheers

Looks like I’ll be on the lookout for a Tekna Copper with 7E7 cap.

Thanks for reply Jayson M.

I have seriously considered selling the SATA HVLP and replacing it with the Tekna copper after reading all these raves about it.

I just can’t get myself to sell the Sata. Been looking around ebay for a decent deal. Sounds like a very good gun for the money, especially since it comes with 1.3 and 1.4 tips.
From what I understand, 7E7 is the compliant/”RP” cap. In your opinion, does a compliant cap do a better job spraying waterborne paint?

Thanks for the reply.

I’ve been to 5 local bodyshops who use PPG waterborne and all of them were using “RP” style guns. Supernova, Sata RP, W400, etc. Hence why I decided to ask here.

I did test the fog lights, and the lower trims, they all fit fine.
I did not test the upper trims (moldings) since I had given them to the bodyshop the prior day.

Thanks for reply everyone. Even the reconditioned bumper seems to be hit on miss.

I got the bumper from the bodyshop today to test fit it. I am actually surprised, it fits way better that I expected.
I know its not exactly perfect OEM fitment, but for the fraction of the cost, I can’t complain. I did not even touch the bumper adjuster so playing with it might make it even better.

I’ll let you be the judge:

Thanks for reply everyone.

I am in Canada, so not sure if we have this whole CAPA deal up here.

The car is a facelift version of the E39, only produced 2001-2003 so its a bit hard finding a decent used one, especially around here.
I totally agree that OEM is the best way, it always is… I don’t mind the bumper not lining with fender perfectly,as long as there are no ridiculous gaps etc…

Initially I was going to get the OEM bumper thinking it would be around $500 or so, but its $823 from the local dealer (before tax), $625 from a dealer in Toronto that offers discount to forum members, plus tax and shipping it would be well over $750 after tax and shipping.
I always get the best stuff for my car, but I think 750 for just the bumper and no moldings is ridiculous. I can get the M5 replica bumper from this company: http://www.umnitza.com/e39-5series-m5-polypropylene-bumper-front-p-1154.html

Lots of good reviews and raves, best bang for the buck bumper, but I think the facelift version looks better. Lots of people go the M5 bumper route.

I think the first one (facelift) makes the car look more “elegant”.

Thanks for reply everyone.

So no to isopropyl alcohol.
I can get the PPG waterborne from the local store that sells them. Not sure which one is more user (hobbly) friendly, but from what I’ve read Sikkens seems to be the top choice. PPG is a lot cheaper though.

Thanks again everyone! Appreciate it.

ryanbrown999,

Do you think one can pull off spraying a fender or maybe a hood with waterborne in a garage? (Sikkens)

I’ve painted my bumper the same color before, used R-M Diamont BC and Sata HVLP 1.3. Worked great.
The metallics are only visible under bright light. Otherwise it looks like jet black.

I’m just a hobbyist.

Limco sucks. Limco performing like Diamont? LOL

I really hate it when paint jobbers try to blow smoke up your ass.

Great!
Thank you Paintwerks and ODG! :cheer:

Great! I’ll use the Lesonal. Most likely I’ll be painting at night, its about 62 now so I’ll be fine.
Just looked at the TDS and it mentions: “For larger vehicles and higher temperatures, 10% Lesonal reducer can be added to improve flow and leveling”.

I have half quart of a universal urethane reducer left, I’ll use that if needed.

Thanks for reply! :rock
Lights are all the same. Made of polycarbonate. Cracking came from using laquer on them which is high solvent and it attacks the plastic. use real urethane clear. Any clear you would normally use on a paintjob.
Great! That’s what I wanted to hear! :exci
I’ll use urethane clear on other headlight. Only reason I used U-Pol was because I was bored and wanted to try. Also didn’t feel like mixing clear and cleaning the gun afterward.

lild: It was not the sanding scratches, I am sure of that. 😛
