I am having trouble matching a bumper for lexus RX code 077 tri coat. I am painting a bumper that has been painted many times before. I have done it twice myself. both times I made a let down panel and was able to match the color on the metal sprayout card. painted the bumper same way as spray out and guess what – no match at all!!! too light on side tone. sikkins autowave is great except for butt matching pearl colors I have no luck. painted many pearl tri coats and as long as I can blend everything is good. any advice from some one that has some experience with autowave tricoats would be helpful.

Are you basing straight over the old bumper? If so and you having no joy i’d be enclined to wet on wet prime the bumper so as to start fresh from a colour perspective.

One trick i was told for helping match bumpers it to give it a really good clean with n anti static cleaner. Apparently the static in the bumpers can cause the various particles to float about whilst the base it still wet. This could give the appearance of it being lighter.

Without seeing the car, and seeing how far out it is. You could try, putting the base on a bit wetter, drop the temperature by a few degrees. Also tacking off the basecoat between coats to remove any flakes that are stood up. All these can make it darker but really depends how far out it is.

We all have jobs that kick us in the balls every now and then. Here is a different idea, not sure what end you did but you could blend into the fenders or quarters and do it just like you did your bumper, that way there is no chance for another re-do.I must be lucky I did toyota 070 the other day,did the hatch inside and out and the bumper cover and it matched bang on.I find with most tri-stages in autowave you need 2 coats + a drop coat at the same or 2psi less air pressure.Jason28 also had a good tip for using a cleaner to remove the static charge on the cover.

i did reseal the bumper with colorbuild plus sealer cbp002 white, then 3 coats of base and 7 coats of midcoat pearl to match sprayout.and was too light i did not tack between coats, maybe the color was applied a little dryer than sprayout card but hard to tell. yes I did use anti stat. and auto clean.

Does your ground coat color match,7 coats of mid coat is alot for autowave, never had to do more than 4.Hope ya get it figured out.

I tinted the base to get it closer . I have always had many problems with tricoat as far as having to put a lot of the mid color to get a good match. But if I blend it out no problems. I am using an iwata 1.3 Orange cap.

Now I understand why so many coats, sikkens reccomends a 1.4 or 1.5 in an hvlp, the devilbiss tekna is the best gun for autowave, even better than the sata 3000 hvlp I was using before.Try reducing your midcoat 30-40%,makes it easier to spray.I would be tempted to just blend into the car and be done with it,or just say that bumpers don’t match anyway :p
