Hi Gentlemen 🙂
Just wondering..How is this procedure done?
To be more precise of what I want to achieve..
I have a carbon look painted on the tank.. the tank is going to be painted in metallic black but I want to protect the carbon look so it says SUZUKI in carbon look.. Do I cover the carbon with vinyl lettering and spray over it with black.. or Do I paint everything black and then paint the carbon look?Which way is more precise.. like tack sharp 🙂
I would do the carbon first, lay the lettering and then spray the black. Just be careful to not get the black really thick where it leaves a tall paint edge. After spraying I always remove the vinyl and go around the edges with my finger and knock all the edges off so they aren’t standing up when cleared. Just make sure you tac everything before you clear to clean up what you knocked off. Probably wouldn’t hurt to put a coat of clear over the art work first, let that flash and then clear everything. That way you are kinda burying your paint edge.
There are actual masking vinyls you can use instead of plain calandered vinyl you have posted. Even though its been a week since you asked i hope all went well. Oracal does make paint masking film like 8010 or something i would have to look it up to be sure.
Ok the masking vinyl is as follows
Oracal 810 is for conformable needs
811 is for flat smooth and rigid substrates
813 if for use with waterborne paint on smooth flat and rigid substratesYou can also use Gerber mask
September 13, 2013 at 5:40 am #44465i have used many types of masking vinyl here in the shop. the oracal 810 is the one you want. its reall nice stuff. they make an 810s that is for solvent paints….dont use it. you want 810. 810s wont stick to anything. 810 is good and if you use the 810 itself as the transfer tape its nice and stretchy so it conforms better than any other over compound curves. avery yellow spray mask is nice too if you need a little higher tack.
