hey new to the site, just wondering why anyone would start painting from bottom to top in a downdraft booth? Dosent make any sense to me as wouldnt the exhaust cause the overspray to be carried onto the already painted surface. Ive seen a bunch of guys do it, and ive always thought that in a downdraft you should always go top down?

dont think it matters as much as carrying a wet edge i always go form the bottom of a fender ta the hood an on over myself i might alt a lil on doors never seem ta have a problem

More so on completes though, i could see it being alrite for clear using slow reducer, but couldnt that cause uneven metallic distribution when spraying base?

I don’t think it really makes that much difference. If I’m painting a doghouse I always start at the bottom and work my way over. Some jobs I start high some I start low. Never noticed a difference. If doing a roof I will always do it first.

This is the first thing I did when I started painting again:

It was done bottom up in a down draft paint booth on the base where I work (it’s the same car as the profile pic to the left here). I usually paint top down when painting an entire car, but it is my car and the first thing I did when I started painting again after 20 years, so I did a lot of things that were probably not proper, haha.

It didn’t seem to matter to much to the panels on the car.

I usually start wherever best fits the job, high or low. And as Bondo said, the most important thing is to work the wet edge.

Dont see where it matters much, Gonna have to agree with working that wet edge. Ive sprayed in plenty of down draft booths, and done it either way. Whatevers comfortable for you.

Within reason, you don’t want to start in the middle of a roof or hood and work your way out and down the fender and then go to the other side and continue from the middle down…that would be dumb.

I spray in a downdraft and paint from top to bottom and bottom to top. It just depends on what Im painting. I have never had any problems doing it that way.

opinions are like rearends….we all got one,
I start on the top drv side do the whole top
halfway down the a-pillars and down the sail panel back into the drv doors and into the quarter over the trunk and pass quarter up sail panel to pass door fender up the pass a-pillar
chase a wet edge like a fool
end up going over the hood finishing on the driver fender up the driver a-pillar..i like slow hardener.
    Don’t have a booth so whatever…

i start where ever i feel like it at the time, unless im doing an overall then i start on the roof, unfortunitly im only 5’9 and i dont have overly long arms so i keep a milk crate handy just incase, man i hate doing vans lol

also depends on the clear you are using. i used to spray completes with duponts HC7600. a speed clear. spraying bottom up would cause problems. top down was the only way. but with most clears it’s not an issue. chase the wet edge and your fine
