I decided to put together a video and a couple of pics to demonstrate how I mask edges. I have been doing it this way for about 5 years with good results. I’m not saying it’s the best way or only way but it works good for me. Try it if you like.
It is the same idea as the 3M transition tape but it gives you more area to mask off of and is alot cheaper. How many bodyshops don’t have 3/4 inch tape around?:)
The idea is a piece of 3/4 tape with one egde folded over 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch. You then line your jambs with the tape leaving the folded edge of the tape about 1/8 of an inch off of the edge. Always make sure you scuff into your edge a little when you sand so that there is a scratch under the tape flap, that way it won’t flake down the road. The video will show how to fold the tape to get your edge. You can make it as long as you want, just work in short sections at a time.

Important tip!!! Don’t pull or put tension on the tape because if you do when you get to the area above the dog leg the part of the tape that is folded over will flip up on you from the tension. Just press a little bit at a time. Same thing as when you are making a curve with fine line and you pull to hard, the edge raises up.
