was informed today that all paint guns in the shop must have serial numbers stamped on the guns. EPA law. I hear that only sata guns are stamped this way. I have 4 devilbiss guns, all either hvlp or compliant that I have to replace. One I just bought last november for 400 bucks, it has the serial number on the box, but thats not good enough. What a bunch of crap!!! I guess this is one of the ways our gov’t can stimulate the economy? If so, whats next? forcing us all to buy new cars with black boxes? Has anyone out there heard of this law? I dont know if it’s a state or fed law, I’m in Ohio though. Sorry to rant, especially since I recently joined this forum, but this law just ain’t right. And if sata guns are the only ones stamped with a serial number, only ones the epa will allow, sounds like a gov’t sponsored monoply to me. I do like sata guns, have couple of those too, but if I am forced to replace the others, that just ain’t right.
May 23, 2012 at 4:59 pm #36990You only need to keep the EPA certification on hand for each gun. Go to the Devilbiss website and print them out and keep in a folder in the office. A copy in the mixing room wouldn’t hurt either.
May 24, 2012 at 4:24 am #37005actully there is a national rule, exuasht filters must 98% effiecent, you can only spray in a inclose room with ventilation, i.e. the paint booth no more open floor spraying, all guns must be hvlp or compliant. it is my understanding that if your gun has hvlp stamped on it no papers, just the non compliant guns need papers, and sata will tell you need there gauge to make the gun compliant even though it’s a rp. u could spray 3 oz of paint on the open floor, that could make for a long paint job. so forth and so on. the best thing you could do is go down to your local epa office and pick up a current copy of the do’s and don’ts. and your suppose to register with the local office stateing your epa compliant.
May 24, 2012 at 4:50 pm #37018I got the letters from the state and federal epa for the 6H rules. I also got the certificates from Devilbiss, and a list of models of guns that are compliant. My guns are cvi, gti, and plus, with the proper size air caps and guages. But they dont have the model number stamped on the guns themselves. Maybe thats what my employer was talking about. How would an epa agent know if these guns are what is written on the certificates if they dont have a model # on them.It sure would suck to have to buy new guns just for that reason.
May 25, 2012 at 5:54 am #37039That should be fine. Ust keep those papers in a folder in you tool box.
May 25, 2012 at 4:03 pm #37046according to my employer, apparently the epa came into a shop somewhere around here and made them remove all the guns not stamped with model numbers. I dont know if they had the certificates or got fined. Hopefully I can convince my employer to let me keep my guns, I gave him the certificates, and letters from the state and fed epa concerning these guns. I’ve sent an email to Devilbiss about this, havent heard from them yet.
if you are talking about the EPA 6H ruling, you just need a letter from the gun manufacturer stating the gun is HVLP or transfer efficent compliant. You can get that letter by going to the gun manfacturer’s website and printing it, then file it. Sounds like the guns you have are good. The government wants us to spray with guns that are compliant to help lower HAPS and VOC’s from going into the air.
