Any thoughts on the latest general motors truck plant closure. This just happened earlier in the week and is down the road from where i work. It seems they’ve decided to outsource to mexico. Bad news for us in ontario.

I don’t think they decided to go to Mexico – they’ve just stopped building vehicles they won’t sell. Sales are way down on SUV’s and trucks due to the increasing gas prices.

They had informed the union that they would be building the new hybrid truck in the Oshawa plant originally. They announced the plant closure a few weeks later. This came shortly after the GM workers contract was negotiated. The Canadian Auto Workers Union believe this contract was negotiated in bad faith and strikes may be afoot.I would think it has much to do with the high cnd dollar.

I think their way overpaid to begin with, getting $40/hr & benefits to attach 2 bolts on the line is an insult to skilled tradesmen making much less. Either way it doesn’t seem like a good sign for this industry.
