I’ve heard talk about it being pushed back to 2011 now!
Woot that’d be great! :cheer:
Jimmo, do you use the Glasurit 90 line? Whats the price difference to R-M Onyx? Obviously its more pricey but how much is the price difference?
I’m gonna use R-M/Glaso basecoats from now on. Got a gallon og UR50 and a part of R-M Diamont the other day, gonna try it as soon as I get that orange cap.
AnonymousMarch 8, 2009 at 8:38 am #13203I use Diamont right now. We still haven’t made the switch to water. I think the prices are pretty well on par with each other, it’s getting hard to consider RM a lower end line to Glasurit. I’d bet the only place Glaso has the edge is with their clears. The prices comparing RM vs Glaso primers, clears and sealers is very similar. RM is even more expensive in some areas. Everyone seems to be saying really good things about onyx, that’s likely what we will be going with.
March 8, 2009 at 5:33 pm #13205Zarbat, I always solvent wipe last so you will be fine. One good thing with water is that if you put your first coat on and something happens(fisheyes or streaking) you can wipe it off with a wet rag.
I saw the same thing as you Joe when we demoed Autowave. Their new clear is nice but REALLY expensive. You can use regular HS+ clear over Autowave. I would like to try 90-line, it sounds nice from what your saying. Autowaves coverage wasn’t very good when I sprayed it, I didn’t think it was much different than Autobase Plus.
March 8, 2009 at 8:22 pm #13209You guys have me worried, might have to look at something else.I know the coverage is good if you use the right shade of colorbuild+ sealer. We are the last solvent shop that our supplier has,so he wants to get us changed over.Joe what training center did you go to??There are some shops in my area that are having problems with Sherwin williams awx,it will be interesting to see in the future who has the best product.
March 8, 2009 at 9:08 pm #13211I am the only shop in my city currently on waterborne so I really have nothing to compare. I think you will be fine with Sikkens. The only drawback I saw was the price. It was higher than there solvent and that was high. I personally think Sikkens is overpriced for what you get. It is a nice product but not the best. I have noticed that every jobber in my area is knocking everybody elses product except for Dupont. Its like a giant cat-fight. Kinda pitiful!
I think it will be interesting once a few more people on here make the switch to here some different opinions. I think it will end up being valuable as I trust other painters a hell of alot more than any rep.
Chicago training center. I am the first in my town of 100+ shops to switch to water.. Sikkens it working hard to get their customers switched, but their requirements are nuts.. I sprayed autobase plus for 8 years and dont really have anything good to say about it.. We had more problems w/ sikkens than with ppg.. Their clears are a pain and die and haze out over time, including hs+ which is mostly what we sprayed.. We had better luck w/ the lesonal clears than the high dollar sikkens crap. We switched to basf and havent had one problem in the few years we have been using it. I am really happy w/ the 90 line and would recommend anyone give it try.. I think you will be hard pressed to find a simpler more reliable system.. BTW we also demoed ppg’s water and really didnt care for it..
March 8, 2009 at 10:11 pm #13216PPG has been all over us wanted to take me to Columbus for a waterborne demo. They continually slam everybody else and say they are #1. That stuff turns me away from them. I hate when people slam somebody else it makes me think they are trying to cover up their own faults. I will agree with you about Sikkens not being all that. Have you ever used the Lesonal glamor clear. Man that is nice looking, it sucks to buff though.
March 8, 2009 at 11:06 pm #13217I am not brand loyal to anybody,I have sprayed just about everyones bc/cc in my 25 years in the industry. But where I am(western Canada) basf is way more money and so is dupont.I’m not a big fan of reps who bad mouth other companies just to make a sale.We spend about $30,000-$40,000 a month just on paint, and in my 8 years of working there we have had very few problems.
Ryan I have used lesonal glamour clear and I really like it,it has a nice gloss and easy to spray.I’m using it on a 70 chevelle next week and I will post pics when I’m done.I like all the lesonal clears, from what I have used they work really well and look great.
Our other painter who has been at the shop since 86 is a diehard sikkens man and will not change,so I think we are stuck with it.We will be going to the Vancouver training center in the next month or so,I’ll keep you guys posted. In my city and Calgary most of the shops have converted, shops are using dupont, ppg(nexa, old ICI Aqua base,I shot it in the 90’s) sherwin williams, basf. Will be interesting as time goes on.March 8, 2009 at 11:42 pm #13218Thats alot of money in paint! I think they all work, you just have to adapt to the one you are using. Seems like with that kind of money a month they should all be kissing your butt trying to get in the door. Since Sikkens and Dupont are the only 2 I have sprayed my comparison would be that I would go with Sikkens for looks and Dupont for production.
March 11, 2009 at 7:30 pm #13255We have been useiing waterborne since the first of the year. It takes a little getting used to. Good Luck
