Question regarding pay of preppers. I do mostly prep work at my shop i do back up painting when head painter is out. Its 1 painter 1 booth and 2 preppers (one of which is useless and i fix his sh** all the time) for a while the painter and I where splitting the total hours through the shop 50/50 i was doing great obviously. the manager later decided that he needs to help cover fellow preppers expense. i agreed to donate 20 hours a week to cover his expense. now they come to me today and want him completely covered. meaning instead of the 75+ hours i was getting i am down to 43 to 53. its all done through stupid percents but that what it breaks down to. Do I have a leg to stand on going to another shop working along a quality painter making the same thing i previously was? i haven’t been outside of this company so I don’t know how others operate. I 100% cannot afford to live off what they are giving me now. please let me know i am so angered by the situation i am ready to walk off but I have a family and can not take that risk.
1st of all … take a deep breath bud and relax :stoned … now if you can’t clear this up with your employer and make it work for you and for him then of course it’s off to greener pastures ….. not sure how your employer can/is justifying such a change/cut in your pay, but as a boss that knows other bosses, yours seems to be influenced by something your not aware of ….. sounds like you need to sit down and have a beer with your boss and each try to understand the others position … could be simple .. could be complex …. either way , an unhappy employee leads to a unhappy boss and vise/versa …. open the lines of communication :kofee
January 12, 2011 at 3:25 am #27055if there are 2 preppers for 1 painter and the shop is flat rate then both preppers hours need to come out of the paint time. the shop shouldnt pay one prepper out of their pocket and the other prepper from the paint time on the estimate. Really if any time is being taken from the painter for the prepper the painter should have a say in it. if he thinks one of the preppers is slacking he should take that up with the boss. if one prepper and one painter can handle all the work than the other prepper should go
It came about because the other prepper is not completely accounted for. But we don’t have the work nor does he pull his weight. Painter automatically gets 50% of paint time the other 50 is for prep. If I say push him out the door they want someone else in there. I dunno. Thinking, go flat rate job for job and pay me for the jobs he does and him for his job. lets see who comes out on top.
(Stone)-good call I do need to calm down just aggravated, puts my entire financial status in a huge bind.I suggest a different trade … this game drives people nuts :exci and has never properly rewarded the participates …. welcome to the life of fume sniffin :dnc no one would get into this for the money :pcorn: cause it just ain’t there :kofee how ever it’s warm dry and not that hard of work compared to some (concrete , roofing , oilfield) I would never talk my son into doing this …. but some how it’s just in me blood.

January 12, 2011 at 4:34 am #27061What does the painter do exactly?Does he just walk in and spray or does he help prep and mask? The percentages are different depending on what he does.Try and talk to your boss,Stone gave very sound advice 😉
Stone- This trade is more of a hobby in the end. my wife is in nursing school when she finishes she will come out making more than I, at that time I quit and finish my degree and never look back, but until that point this has to pay my bills. Funny thing you are not the first by far to tell me this haha.
and as far as what the painter does, I have the car masked and just needs to be bagged and sprayed. he helps me bag from time to time. rest is I.     :chairIf everyone is on flat rate then u should account your hours for the jobs u prep.. but i don’t know what all the agrements are in your shop that u split it up at the end of the week etc… or u could find a shop were u do all your own prepping and painting then u can have it all….:weights
There have been a lot of good points made.
I agree with Stone, talk to your boss 1 on 1 and see if you (both) can come to and agreement/understanding. As far as leaving goes, the grass isn’t always greener…every shop has its faults/problems. The key is finding the shop whose problems bother you the least.
As far as pay goes, are you paid the same rate as the painter? Jayson mentioned that the splitting varies depending on how the work is allocated and what you agree to. 50/50 may be fair, or may be weak (for the prepper). Personally, I would prefer to prep and paint it myself. Maybe you and the painter can be accountable for your own jobs (you prep and paint yours, he preps and paints his) and the third guy can go away…or whatever might work for everyone.
To an extent I disagree with Stone about the money. Money is there and can be made in this trade. You have to be skilled, really want it and put yourself in the right place; however, most aren’t so fortunate.
January 12, 2011 at 5:50 am #27069If he walks in and sprays he should only get 30%,most of the hard work is done, all he has to do is blow, tack, mix, spray.Talk to your boss about that or do what others have suggested, prep and paint your own jobs.
