I painted a Subaru with my gun for base and clear and I really wasn’t impressed with the finish. This was the second car I’ve ever painted and the first car with this gun.
I’m really anal about orange peel on my cars and this one really isn’t bad at all but I’m on a quest for the perfectly flat paint job and I thought I would be able to do a little better on my first try with this gun.
For my basecoat I used Matrix Systems paint and for my clearcoat I used Refinish Solutions 2.1 VOC urethane clear coat (RSC-320). I only used two coats of clear and I didn’t add more reducer or activator or whatever. Can someone please give me some tips that can help me achieve the best possible finish I can with this gun? Like what my air pressure should be? How much to turn all the knobs? What kind of clear and base coat should I use? What if I want to use waterbase? How close should I have the gun? How do I know if I’m moving fast enough with this gun? Is it a bad idea to use this gun for basecoat?
I really want to have every advantage I can so all the information I can get, the better.
Thank you for your time!December 28, 2011 at 11:19 pm #34936what your asking is for someone to teach you how to paint in a forum post. There are so many variables depending on your environment, air supply, and materials that your question is almost unanswerable. It’s kinda like asking how to wire a house to code, there is just too much to explain easily. It has taken most of us years of experience to know such things. One thing I can tell you is if you really don’t like orange peel get good at buffing. While a person can spray a pretty slick finish right off the gun there will always be some texture due to the nature of what your doing. Everything you spray has to have a certain amount of build and some texture is just part of it.
One thing that will help is to go back and read through old forum posts. Learn all you can about how paint works chemically, proper air supply and proper prep. Those will put you in a much better place to fine tune your spraying ability.

A 1.3 should be a good setup for basecoat, and with High Solids clears it should be fine too although I prefer a little more flow just so it doesn’t take so long (I use a 1.4 for shooting clear, both HS and old school)
But- unfortunately- RyanBrown said it just right, I couldn’t Tell you what to do because of the variables. I’ve painted more cars than I could count and the only way to get close to perfect is to Practice. practice practice practice practice practice practice….. etc. the more you paint the better you will know how to deal with each variable.
And orange peel- there is a fine line between acceptable and too rough. If you are painting a show car the answer is easy- give good flash time, put on one extra coat or clear , then cut and buff it. If you are doing repairs or spot jobs the answer is to get your “orange peel” the same as factory which always has some texture. even Lexus- recently won an award for “best factory finish”- has orange peelAlright good stuff.
I’m looking for some more tips guys, please. I know glass clear is possible because I’ve seen it on a factory Aston Martin in Europe. I’m sure in the future I will be able to do it and I think I’m going to get there by learning how to do every little thing the best possible way I can do it. So if you think you have any information that can help me get to that point, you will help me out tremendously.Thank you.
So whats no flash off mean? Does it mean that I have to paint with no breaks in between my coats? I thought that you were supposed to let it dry for a little bit so that you could put on a big heavy last coat with no runs.
And how would you do the coats if you had my gun? One really light, then 2 medium coats?January 12, 2012 at 7:41 am #35245There are a lot of factors envolved here. I have never used the nova hybrid. I usually do two medium to wet coats. It’s just something you will have to practice and play with. I’m sure you have a good gun there and if you are using a decent clear you will soon be getting great results.
Come on people, REALLY.
So this is only the second car you ever painted and you want the kind of result that it takes professional painters years to master. A glass finish out of the gun is virtually impossible. Its just the nature of the beast. Doesnt matter what Gun you buy. So many variables go into getting a smooth finish. Practice Practice practice. If you got a finish thats as good as a typical factory car on your second try then I would be really happy if I were you. If you want glass, then your gonna have to sand it and buff it.January 17, 2012 at 4:28 am #35347

Matrix is not the cheapest paint on the market :deadhorse and i can spray any of their clears like glass. The 220 is an easier clear if you are not in a compliant area :flamewar
