I just picked up a 99 sunfire, not the greatest car in the world but parts are cheap and their easy to work on. I thought before I drive it I’m gonna fix it up and give it a unique paint job, I figure it would be a good conversation starter to remind people I’m in the collision business also. Seeing as the reps will supply whatever materials I want i don’t have much to loose anyhow.

I’ll post some pictures of the car when I can, I’m thinking a fadedown would be really neat seeing as i’ve never seen one in my neck of the woods.

    Something like this:

Maybe add some flames on the front, whatever… Its still probably quite a few weeks away from painting so If you guys can suggest anything I’d appreciate it! The shops a bit busy for me to commit much time to it at the moment.

the fade down looks pretty neat on the tahoe but i dont think the sunfire is tall enough to pull off a good looking one. I’m kinda partial to flames myself or you could do some crazy multicolored graphic

Ok, I;m gonna be epoxy sealing it friday night & start basing saturday morning, so if anyone thinks my plan needs tweaking speak up now!!! … please!!
Here’s a picture of a sunfire so you can picture it better:

I plan to apply a dark metallic color (silver-grey) over the hood, roof & trunk. I’m going to lighten it up a bit and try and blend it into a lighter silver, starting from the top outside edges as it starts to roll vertically. From their take the lighter silver down close to the bottom, I plan to apply a yellowish-pearl 3 stage white (not a bright white) along the bottom edge and bring it just under then the moldings, not very high at all.

i would get the silver base down first then start with your top and bottom colors.get coverage with the dark color only in the center of the panels then cut it back with clear base to smoke out the blend. leave it real transparent. its better to have to put an extra coat on than to have to try and take some off. you may have to switch back and forth between colors to get a nice soft even blend.and when you think”well maybe just one more coat on the blend area” stop first take a break and come back and look at it. its easy to overdo it and wind up with a not soft soft blend. save the pearl coat for last.

    Thanks for the suggestions ding…

One thing I’m wondering, I’m planning on just fading each color out by adding binder basically. I haven’t really done much of this kinda thing, so I’m wondering if maybe i’d get better results mixing my colors in to fade one into the other. Ie. to fade my grey into silver, add 25% of my silver, then 50,75,100 to step one color into another. I hope I’m making sense. I, just don’t want to turn my color into mud trying that.

I seen that, thats where I stole the picture from. Roberts advice kills me, Reducer is key! lol! Who know’s, I may of actually had a use for ODG…Maybe I’ll give him a call. I’m sure he wont mind helping an old pal out.

I did spray a test panel today and it came out really nice. I started with a dark grey (graphite) and slowly brought in a bit of my light silver in as kept blending down with it. I did the white to silver the other day & that seemed fairly easy. Its looking good so far, I’ll try and post some pics tomorrow. Still any advice between now and Saturday AM is appreciated.

I have not got any advice for you as I have never sprayed a complete this way. I am interested in seeing how you do it though. If your not too busy a few pictures would be pretty cool. Good luck!

I don’t know if this will help any Jimmo, but when I do fades like that I try to use base colors that have the same pearls in them. Also, see if you can paint the back doors shut,LOL!

Yeah I would love to see some “action” photos. Good luck, you don’t have much vertical room to work with on a Sunfire:unsure:
