Alright heres a few pics for now, i’m trying to get more.. My camera is being a pain in the ass, I’m having a really hard time capturing the effect on it. I’m gonna try and get it outside shortly. I’m pretty happy with it overall, I decided to keep it a bit simpler with the way the color flowed & took jims advice on staying with the same metallics. It is really dark on the top & blends seemlessly into a light silver, then into a pearl white. I kept the white down lower then I originally planned on. Being my first attempt & it only being a 99 sunfire I can’t complain. BTW, much of it got taped & next to no r&i’s…. I’m not that fussy with my own cars, especially being a 99 sunfire!! I’m confident the paint job will still outlast the car! Anyhow, here:

AnonymousJanuary 18, 2009 at 12:17 am #12291Wow, I got it outside & man it looks really good!!! Any trace of blending I could see inside has just disappeared. The color flips alot as you walk around it, the pictures don’t really do it justice.

January 18, 2009 at 12:27 am #12293looks pretty good there jimmo. looks like you brought the darker color down a little more than you wanted to though. at least you took the lights out;) trunk musta been tough to paint with that spoiler on.
overall its a nice effect. you should be happy:)January 18, 2009 at 12:29 am #12294Your color choices might just be subtle enough that I won’t dog ‘ya for pimping out your grandma’s car.
Your color choices might just be subtle enough that I won’t dog ‘ya for pimping out your grandma’s car.
lol! I know, its a bit of a practice car. As a collision guy I don’t get to play like this much so it was a nice to mess around. Hopefully the next set of wheels i come across will be worth doing something to. Now I’ve at least gotten my feet wet with this sorta thing so I’ll go a bit more extreme on my next project.
Sorry about the pics Bk. Its is subtle, but still in person its quite noticeable. I had a few guys come in from the dealership next door & just circled it wondering what was going on. I never mentioned anything even about painting it, they were just drawn to it wondering how the color changed so much as they walked around it. I eventually pointed out if you stand directly behind or in front you can see how the color differed from the top to the bottom.
I did kinda chicken out a bit and play with safe, easy colors. All in all I’m happy with the way it turned out, maybe I need to practice some flames on the front. :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
btw. The way I ended up doing this was with a dark graphite metallic. I slowly added a very light silver until it was nothing but. fluffed a bit of 3-stage white along the bottom & called er a day. I did have to grab a few colors here and their and go back for touching up.

overall its a nice effect. you should be happy:)
I know, I felt guilty painting with the spoiler on even knowing its my own car. The reason for it was because the last jerk panelbonded it on and I didn’t wanna open that can of worms. I did want to!
January 18, 2009 at 1:18 am #12300ya the shame you must feel now must be unbearable:laugh:
January 18, 2009 at 6:11 am #12302Congratulations Jimmo, you just created the illusion of salt spray on a dark gray car, LOL! But seriously, it looks great. I did a similar experiment on a Cavalier one time that went horribly wrong. Instead of respraying it, I just cleared it and sold it. Of all the cars I have done, this hideous looking thing drives by the shop about 6 times a day,LOL!
