Any gun can be used for whatever you want…it just may or may not work well. All that makes a gun suitable for water is that the gun can be submerged in water and not corrode/oxodize. So most waterborne guns and their components are either chrome plated (including inside passages), stainless steel or anodized aluminum.

Basically the gun you mentioned is recommended for waterborne base and HS Clear (solvent). I don’t believe there are any waterborne clears available…

That gun will work well with HS clears and also waterborne basecoat. it was designed with basecoat in mind but later found out it handled clear as well. Maybe Andy T will chime in but he used a WBX for clear for a little while and believed he got on with it pretty good.

Sikkens and Lechler both have a waterborne clearcoat in the UK

I’d be curious to hear how these waterborne clears are working and holding up.
I would assume they’re too new to have any solid results available yet.

I’m sure they hold up just fine Rat. It would have had to of passed the UV and salt spray tests and everything else before they release it. The reasons why you will probably never see them is their VOC is higher than some of the solvent clears. Also they get out of just really slow compared to solvent. Unless your spray environment is very clean you would end up with more dirt than solvent.

That sounds backwards to me but not familiar with the WBX, The W400 is a great clear gun though.

    Hi Tosh.

It’s already been said, but yes, that gun is suitable for waterborne basecoat or high solids clears.

I use my WBX daily for WB base, and as long as you keep the fluid tip perfectly clean (especially the V grooves) it does a fantastic job in my opinion. I use a 1.3 though, and find it has a more than adequate fluid output. In fact I have the needle wound in slightly so I’m not even using the full 1.3 (if you see what I mean). It puts out more than enough paint for my needs, and if you’ve seen my recent post, you’ll know I’m not exactly a slow painter!

I also used it some time back as my daily clear gun using DeBeer 8-214, which is pretty high solids, and it did a very good job with that too. Not quite as good as it’s replacement – a WS400 1.3 Clear – but I was very happy with it at the time. The Supernova just took things up another level for me.

You don’t say what products you’re spraying, but give me a shout if I can be of any more help with settings or whatever 🙂
