Here’s a small project I’m in the midst of. I started out with these cabinets:

Sanded them, applied a black & brown tinted clear, then another coat of straight clear (923-109) and was very happy with the results:

Kitchen still needs a lot of work, floors are next on the chop block. I still need to replace the hinges and handles on the cabinets (plus do the lower ones) and that should do.

you may have to dull them down though. the glare seems like it could be annoying. maybe just a little flattener in the clearAnonymousJanuary 29, 2009 at 6:26 am #12538They look too good for my kitchen! got alot of work ahead of me….wonder if i can paint that countertop? need ta replace that backsplash too..
….And if I wanted a flat finish I’d send them to bondo’s shop 😆 😆
Maybe I’ll flatten the cabinets in my next kitchen , bringing the wife home a bottle of norton detail spray so she can keep get the fingerprints off em…. I might get sick of the shine, well see I guess.
btw, that last photo makes the kitchen look a lot worse then it really is.
AnonymousJanuary 29, 2009 at 4:12 pm #12540No, didn’t buff em….I think I will though, few nibs irritate me when i see them. I guess i cant just through em outside and not see them like a car.
January 29, 2009 at 4:22 pm #12541I like them! I would have never thought about doing that.
Did you strip the original finish off or just knock the top off? You need some black and stainless steel appliances to go with those cabinets, that would look cool. If only money really did grow on trees!
AnonymousJanuary 29, 2009 at 4:26 pm #12542Its a laminate (i believe) attatched to some particle board. I gave it a light sanding with some 320, a red scotch padding and sprayed it. It was just a tinted clear over it so I still have the original wood pattern from underneath. I’ve got a lot of work to do at the house & won’t be able to afford cabinets for years, so its nice that this seems to be working out. Thinking of doing something with my countertops next.
January 29, 2009 at 4:43 pm #12543When me and the wife bought our house I was in the same situation. Mine were stained so I striped them and painted them a low gloss black.
I don’t know what you have in mind for your countertops but we bought some at Lowes (don’t know if you have them in canada) They are sections of MDF in various lengths and angles with formica already on them. You only have to cut an end to length and band the end. We did all ours for $127. They’re cheap. Ours were already formica and were an aweful shade of green so they had to go!
AnonymousJanuary 29, 2009 at 9:49 pm #12546Thanks mike,
I ended up taking two down to sand & polish. Gonna polish them all over the next week. Every time I walked by it drove me nuts seeing the little imperfections! Kinda wish I used a lacquer now.
January 29, 2009 at 9:52 pm #12547i dunno i kinda like the look of the urethane clear i think they look sharp nice jobB) B)
January 29, 2009 at 11:32 pm #12555They look really nice brother.. My wife and I redid our kitchen a couple years ago.. We bought a bunch of new unfinished cabinets and then I stained them and cleared them.. The gloss will die down a bit in my opinion.. maybe not, but ours seemed to do that.. Of course my wife thinks she should rub em down with Murphs Oil soap, so maybe thats why they dont shine like they did..
Still yet I think urethane cleared cabinets look awesome!!!!!
