Hi guys I’m new to the forum and was needing some advice. I’m currently in the process of finishing up my very first Paint Job. I worked in Classic Automotive Restoration since for 9 yrs so I’m well rounded in all aspects but excellent in body work, fabrication, and metalwork/polish. Anyways back to question as stated I’m having difficulties with my paint lifting around my featheredge. I’m assuming it has something to do with the cheap primer I’m using. To me it seems as the primer is lifting up the existing paint? I tried a dry spray afterwards but after my second less dry spray it lifted again. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance and I apoligize for the lengthy post.
March 18, 2014 at 7:06 am #46139So the lifting happens all the time?What is your substrate?What kind of primer are you using lacquer or 2k urethane?If your working on old cars it is best to strip to bare metal to avoid reactions,if this is not possible a coat of epoxy primer will help to keep old paint work stable.We need more info to help…..
It’s cheap a lacquer primer on a Acrlyic urethane… That’s all the specifics I have… Sorry. My roommate has a habit with messing with stuff I tell him not to. All label are gone all I know is a premixed lacquer primer( I know I’m gonna get crap for this but Rustoleum from Autozone), and an acrylic Urethane Single Stage Paint I Bought Offline.. Working on a budget.
March 18, 2014 at 8:59 am #46142Unfortunately those are the kinds of problems that happen with cheap materials.Using lighter coats at first is your only option( besides getting better products),if you put it on heavy it will wrinkle.good luck
And if I understand correctly is the problem using a lower based primer such as lacquer or just the brand? Cause I’ve used higher grade lacquer primer but never had a problem, also I did a few touch ups with the same primer but no featheredge just paint over( sanded the paint til it was all uniform) but never had to featheredge. Is it just the feather edging that it has an effect on? Just trying to learn..

Premixed primer is going to be full of thinners. Normally what I’d do is mix a batch of primer with less than 1:1 thinners instead of the usual 1.5:1. You don’t have that option so start by taking the lid off the tin and letting some of the thinners evaporate. Mix occasionally to stop skin forming and to expose more thinners laden paint. You’re probably looking for an overall reduction in volume of around 20% so measure it up and keep an eye on it. Once you’ve got rid of the excess thinners you’ll have a higher solids content primer that should still spray through your gun (assuming 1.8-2.0mm tip.
Now apply this in thin coats. In extreme cases I’ll even follow each pass with a heat gun to flash off the thinners more quickly. Allow to flash a few minutes and then repeat, maybe half a dozen times until you have a good solid coat of primer. Leave for a few hours then repeat, building your primer gradually in coats that are not wet. If you intend to block then repeat the whole process a third, maybe fourth time. Allow your primer to dry well, overnight at least, then block and proceed as normal, but don’t apply the finish coats too wet.
You could save the whole drama by using a sealer and 2K primer, but if your budget says use the paint you have then that’s what you’re stuck with.
Thanks for all advice guys. Made a few adjustments to my gun and took my time priming little by little, solved the problem. I do have a 2k primer but I didn’t want to use it cause of color differences and I was blending. I hate to us anything else but this was what I had to work with. My next project will be all sound materials I have a 2k urethane Primer, sealer, and PolyUrethane dual Stage Gun Metal Gray that’s going on a 64 Nova. I’m planning on improving equipment by that time though as we’ll, gun, filters etc. I attached some photos of the car in its current state, shooting for Sunday to complete.
