Can you guys tell me your opinions on Akzo Nobel / Sikkens? My shop is considering switching to them. How do they compare to the others? What’s their benefits and/or downfalls? I’ve never used them and I’m not really familiar with their reputation.
AnonymousJune 17, 2008 at 2:44 am #10713I have never used them myself other then their base coat which covered nice. But i have spoken with a few painters using or that have used it and they’ve all said the same thing, One of the best lines out their. just very pricey from what I understand. Keep in mind this is all third party information, I haven’t used the system myself. I would think them to be very familiar with water technology considering their the only company to produce a waterborne clear that I’m aware of.
June 17, 2008 at 3:05 am #10714My shop just switched from Sikkens to Dupont. What product are you spraying now, that will help me compare a little better. Btw I sprayed sikkens for 7 years and have been to their school twice so I know it like the back of my hand!
June 17, 2008 at 4:53 am #10719I don’t think one is better than the other, they both have their pros and cons. Dupont’s color is either on or off where Sikkens usually had a good color match, but it may be a hassle trying to find it. Dupont clear sprays nicer but will die a little bit where as Sikkens was a little more unforgiving but held an excellent gloss. Dupont basecoat coverage is good if you use the Valueshades, Sikkens was pretty good no matter what.
June 17, 2008 at 5:45 am #10720Thanks for the help everyone. We’re mostly Dupont, but that’s most likely gonna change soon. I’m trying to get as much info about Sikkens ahead of time so I can prepare a little.
ryanbrown999 – why did your shop switch from Sikken to Dupont? What are the positives and/or negatives from the move? From what I gather, Sikkens (Akzo Nobel) is sold directly by them and not a middle man vendor like other brands. I’m wondering if this difference means anything?
June 18, 2008 at 5:29 am #10740i’ve shot sikkens. sw . currently shooting dupont ..the last shop was standox it was a great product ,,like mentioned earlier they all have there ups and downs ..changing paint companies is a big commentment..good luck on your choice..don’t let them lock you in long term,in case you have second thoughts .it will be next to impossible to reverse your decision..if i could change today it would be STANDOX .but you also have to consider availability in your area….
June 18, 2008 at 3:28 pm #10745Pro Techt, We switched because of money. If it were me and I had to pick a paint line because of quality and performance it would be Glasurit or Spies Hecker. Probably the Spies. I would pick the product then see if you can get the money where you want it. We did the opposite and in retrospect I am not sure if it was the smartest move. One thing to consider is that water is around the corner and that will change some things. I have sprayed Autowave and the new clear Superior 250 and it is unreal! We didn’t sign a contract so when the water comes we are going to reevaluate things a little. If there is anything else I could help you with please let me know!
June 19, 2008 at 2:02 am #10752we went from dupont to standox best move we made,as for sikkens it’s all how you use it. but its more along the lines of dupont.as for cost ours dropped when we went to standox because it has way beter coverage so we use less tints.
June 19, 2008 at 4:43 am #10754If you can afford it shoot it.I try to make a little fo my work, besides giving it all away to paint companys.Just get ya some Omni or crossfire and you can make more money.
If you are looking to compare Sikkens to Dupont. Look at the Lesonal line pricing is better than Dupont. They have a new variant deck that is unreal. Going waterborn use it the 250 clear is the best i ever seen..
I have been using lesonal water for 2 years now i am using it along side spies solvent (witch i am running down due to solvent regulations in this country)
Lesonal water is cheaper brand of akzo we have great results on colour with lesonal it defintnetly has the edge on colour matchiing over spies.
Fast1man i think you mean 240 clear, whats this variant deck you mention ??
