Question about the satajet 4000 RP for clear. My paint rep says I need to shoot close and fast with wide open fluid and fan, at 29 psi to get best results with sikkens superior 250. I like to spray a bit further and slower. I can lay the clear without runs and dry spray consistently but with minor orange peal i would like to get more of a glass finish. How should I adjust my gun for that or what do I have to change in my technique. Thanks

You can set the pressure a tad lower if you prefer and if you want to spray further and slower then do it that way, I doubt you’ll see that much of a difference. One thing to be sure of is to set your wall regulator as low as possible to achieve the PSI you want at the gun. If you choke off that air supply too close to the gun you’ll get the pressure but not the CFM which will distort your spray pattern.

Also are you saying having a regulator on gun at 29-30 psi can create more orange peel versus setting at wall? Would upping the psi help clear lay out smoother?

February 24, 2014 at 6:17 am #45965I have sprayed sikkens superior 250 for 5 years(its on my chevelle in my avatar too) and find it is very easy to lay down nice(the 2pack is even easier). With a 4000rp I use a 1.4 28-30psi,wide open fan and fluid 4-5 inches from the surface. My first coat is more of a medium quick pace but l lay down more material than a fast closed coat or 1/2coat.My second coat is still at a close distance but I am a little slower so I can put on a nice full wet coat.I get a nicer smoother finish with 2 medium coats or 1 medium/1 full wet coat vs the coat and a half technique.Thats my 2 cents….
I sprayed the 250 for 2 years as well. With the 4000 RP, my technique was the same as Jaysons, only difference is I sprayed at 30-32PSI.
This typically matched OEM texture easily, and with a slight adjustment in distance and speed (a hair closer and a touch slower) it would lay very smooth.
February 24, 2014 at 8:29 am #45969Yah my first ones usually about a medium coat second heavier. I use a 1.3 tip you guys like the 1.4 better? Spray at a maybe 6-7in. I can match factory texture (minor peel) was just wondering on how to lay it even better… haha just like to surpass my work on each job I do and feel like putting on any heavier doesn’t help. so would it be distance and speed holding me back since full open fan and fluid is a must at around 30psi
February 24, 2014 at 9:25 am #45970IMO distance and speed make a huge difference, the video explained it very well. The sweet spot for atomization with an rp is 4-5 inches. The further away you are and slower you go you are increasing how much material is going on the surface. In short you are adding to the texture/orange peel of the surface.I don’t like a 1.3 at all with superior,it over atomizes the material and at the pressure you are sprayng is not helping the end result. For collision jobs matching the factory texture is all you need, but on a complete you want it as smooth as possible. If you are open to trying something new cut your distance in half and increase your speed ,sikkens clears have always worked better close and fast.
Reducer selection plays a big part in the equation as well. When using 3 pack if I did a front end or 3 side panels or more I would use slow, the clear will be smoother vs spot and panel.I call this slowing down to speed up(a slower clear goes on nicer and dries faster as its a thinner coat vs a faster mix) :stoned
February 24, 2014 at 9:53 am #45971Thx for the info and tips I’ll try to adjust my spray technique and see where that takes me. In another direction have any of you sprayed with an iwata supernova (ls400) I have been told that that gun is sprayed further and slower versus the RP. Would I possibly get better results in switching to one of those? If I can’t adjust to fast and close spraying with the RP haven’t really tried any other clear guns besides this one…
