I have a dent on the quarter panel on a 67 camaro that you can easily reach from inside the trunk. The dent looks like a soccer ball whacked it. I opened the trunk and popped it back out and it looks fine but if you were to push a little on the out side it pops back in. My question is, do I have to heat it up and cool the metal to get it to shrink or should I use a dagger shrinking hammer or something like it to shrink the metal?
Thanks.

Well what ya got for tools? It isnt necessary to spend $100 for a disk or a hammer and waffle dolly. I hear good things about the disks but the shrinking hammers and dollies [spiral or waffle type] simply dont work on heavy sheet steel like your working on a 67. If you have a unispotter type stud gun you can use it by simply holding the trigger extra long on the highest spots in your repair, you can use an oxy acetylene torch to heat and quench it or even a small hand held propane torch. In a pinch you can just weld a small bead on it with your mig to suck it up.

December 15, 2009 at 9:36 am #17921You work from the highs to the lows. Keep a squirt bottle of water to chase the highs down. It’s pretty cool to work with the metal – not against it (it almost always wins). I’ve successfully shrunk 18ga with my disk without issue. It’s easier for someone starting out to use this technique than playing with a torch IMHO. I’ve always found a great deal of satisfaction in working out a high or removing oil can from a panel with just my disk, some water and time.

If your new and just starting out an Oil can is a B to learn on by your self!
You can do more damage than good very easy! Very FAST! Stay away from the welder!
and the Torches! just speaking from experience    Bad memories! :censTry a Disk first easier to learn shrinking with a disk.
Plus its harder to damage the panel with a disk!

I ended up getting so frustrated with an Oil canning roof I ended up destroying it :cens and had to patch the whole roof…. It wasn’t pretty. :blush:Hind sight is always 20/20 and now I wish I had listened more and worked it more before getting frustrated and doing what I had done.
