Hi,
I have bought a used bumper and grill for my 2008 Mazda MX-5.
I would like to know how to properly remove [u]all[/u] the paint on it since it is not the same color has my car.
Bumper is plastic to my knowledge and grill is fiberglass.

December 3, 2011 at 10:06 pm #34493unless the paint is cracked, peeling etc, there is no need to remove it. it can be sanded and painted. if you do want to remove it you either need to sand it all off or use a chemical stripper made for bumpers. either way sucks and is the reason most places will replace the cover if it needs stripping

Just as Ding said.
Usually stripping takes so much time (and a fair bit of materials) that a new bumper is more economical. If you do strip, it almost always has to be primed with a good flexible 2k primer surfacer, not just sealed as with a new bumper.
If the bumper you have is good sand/scuff it well, seal then paint it.
that is great since I will be using this bumper with special grill from Japan only in the summer months and putting back original one in winter months.
I will be painting it myself at our companies paint shop (first timer)

December 5, 2011 at 10:02 pm #34517I have had the best success with bumpers by shooting a little rattle can plastic adhesion promoter on the bare spots, nicked corners in shipping, etc., then blast the whole thing with epoxy primer and filler primer.
Is it just freight to AK, or are all bumpers always beat up when they get to you guys?
